Scoring express? Streamdeck? Notation Express?

I’ve literally taken the same approach and thought of the same exact sliding puzzles when doing it! weird minds think alike :joy:

You can duplicate a profile or create a temporary one, then cut/copy/paste as you need to. Sometimes I plan with diagrams on paper so I know where buttons are to go, because sometimes I change my mind.
Then tidy up by deleting the profiles not needed (rename etc.)

Thanks everyone! I’ve managed to move things around using your recommended technique. I’m trying to re-create a profile that someone posted recently (tho I can’t find it now). There are several buttons that I can’t find: Grid, Previous System, Next System, Custom Zoom, and Click. Do they exist or do they have to be programmed - and if so, how?

Sorry for asking more stupid questions… So I’ve moved things around from their locations in the original profile. Then I closed that screen to work on something else. Now I can’t find my way back to the new profile I created. It’s on the SD but I can’t find the onscreen version to make further changes.

I have a script that works, but for whatever reason, I can’t add it to my Stream Deck profile.
I can’t figure out how to make a button on the SD activate that script.
Could someone take a few minutes to explain to this simpleton (I proudly bear the mark of “Simplicity” on my brow)?

I have been wondering about this myself. What happens when Dorico 6 is launched and there is a new version of NE? In the Notation Express for Dorico - Installation video he says, that you have to uninstall the old version before installing a new one. But I assume all customisations are lost when you uninstall the old version? How does one deal with this? Having to start over from scratch is not my cup of tea.

Here’s @FredGUnn’s technique:

That sounds way beyond my capabilities as of now. If I understand, it involves creating a macro (in SD?) and then assigning a key, I would need a step-by-step tutorial. Does one exist?

Fortunately, it’s actually pretty easy to get around this.

What I recently did when the SE 5 was updated was:

  1. Grabbed a quick screenshot of my existing customized NE profile just for reference.

  2. made a new temporary SD profile (I called it “Dorico NE Holding Bin").

  3. copied/pasted all of my custom buttons into the same positions in the new blank profile as they held in the NE profile. (This keeps everything about each button — behavior and custom appearance. Being particular about the position isn’t necessary, but simply helped when I later reconstructed things in the new profile.)

  4. tested the temporary profile in Dorico to be sure everything worked (it did, flawlessly).

  5. uninstalled the older NE profile and installed the new one.

  6. moved buttons around (with copy/paste) in the updated NE profile to make room for my custom buttons and different positions, including moving buttons I don’t need to see to page 2.

  7. pasted each custom button into its desired spot.

Also, note that earlier in this thread Notation Central’s @Philip_R suggested this might be improved in the future:

Here’s where you can find those (I think — your names don’t always exactly match what I see):

  • Notes > More Notes > Increase/Decrease Grid Res
  • Formatting > Move to Previous/Next System
  • I made Custom Zoom just by assigning opt/alt + Z to a button, then getting its appearance as I wished:
  • If by click you mean the metronome click, you’d have to first create a custom key command for it in Dorico, then you could assign that command to your SD button.

If I understand you correctly, you’ll want to go to the SD menu:

Then switch configurations:

FWIW, one or more of these Elgato videos might be helpful, especially for newer SD users.

Sounds good, thanks! Here’s a REALLY stupid question: how to I get back to the revised profile on my Mac that I’ve edited and is currently on my SD? Each time I’ve edited so far, I re-downloaded the profile that comes with NE and started from scratch.

Not trying to be pedantic, but just want to break this down to be sure I understand:

Do you mean get back to it in the SD configuration app or to have it become active when you launch Dorico? It sounds like you’re seeing the edited profile on the SD, so I’m not completely sure what’s nt working, sorry.

Also, NB: if you have a SD profile opened in the configuration app, then profiles won’t change — this really “messed me up” when I first got my SD. You have to close the SD configuration app in order for the SD to respond to computer app changes. (Does that make sense?)

Do you mean re-installed? (You shouldn’t have to.)

thank-you.
I got it to work (I don’t remember it being so convoluted last time)

One very annoying thing in the SD interface is, once you’ve finished entering all the information for your new button, there’s no “apply” or “return” or “main menu” type button.

it took me a while to realize I just turned the whole damned thing off and when I used it, it worked.

NOTE TO DORICO DEVELOPERS:

Please let the Jump bar actually find “Key Commands” in the Preferences menu, rather than opening up your browser to that list of every key command in the universe.

Press J for the jump bar, type “key commands” and the program responds with a single choice, “Key Commands”, which if you click on, opens the help file page that lists key commands.

There should also be an option for opening the Preferences menu where you can actually access key commands.

Touch Portal is my choice. Perfect for my needs.

I have two big Android tablets and three biggish Android phones. They all, if I so wanted, could independently control my Windows desktop PC (with Dorico Pro).

But for now, I am using ‘only’ one tablet that can have endless amount of buttons with the pro upgrade: “The Pro Upgrade ($13.99, One-Time Payment, Lifetime license) will unlock features such as an unlimited amount of pages, up to 110 buttons on a page.”

There’s a Multiple Devices upgrade ($6.99, One-Time Payment, Lifetime license): “With Multiple Devices upgrade you are able to connect multiple devices to your Touch Portal desktop setup. This upgrade will allow you to use multiple devices showing different Pages and you will be able to use them independently.”

So either $13.99 (or $13.99 + $6.99 = $20.99). That’s all. No need to buy any expensive hardware. No need to pay for any annoying subscriptions.

Available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Free limited version for you to first try and see if you like it.

Wi-Fi or USB connection. Both work just fine. There’s also, for example, a free MIDI plug-in for Touch Portal (as @David_Keeffe already said).

I am very happy with Touch Portal with my current setup of an Android tablet and Windows desktop PC. Amazing, actually. And fun.

Want to try? Go here: Touch Portal

What would it take to have one button to increase grid resolution when pressed and to decrease grid resolution when pressed again?

Don’t understand the 2nd paragraph Also, NB…

I think after moving things around in the configurations app they responded immediately on the SD.

That’s because it was lousy writing on my part. :person_facepalming: Sorry about that! Let me try that again:

Yes, buttons will respond immediately upon editing. I was trying (poorly) to address another issue: In an ideal setup, SD profiles will automatically switch when designated apps open, then back to the default (I think of it as “home”) profile whenever no app has been specified. What confused me at first is that if you’re editing things in the SD Configuration app, those automatic switches won’t happen. (At least that was true some time back; maybe they’ve updated that behavior.) I just wasn’t sure if you were running into that potentially confusing issue.

Hope I did a better job this time 'round.
