I’m looking to use SE for choir members to learn parts. I can’t seem to select notes or rests to ‘play from’. Is this because I have more players than SE allows?
Yes, indeed. You can’t select anything if the project is read-only. Possibly the easiest way to set the playback position without selecting anything is in Play mode: you can click in the ruler at the top of the event display to move the playback line to that position.
Is this ever likely to change? Trying to make it as simple as possible for choir members to open and rehearse.
It’s not especially likely to change, no, at least not soon. Preventing selection is key to preventing editing, from a technical point of view.
