Segno (sign symbol) is microscopically small

Perfect! Thank you! Saved my *ss!

Feature request: Our team will be preparing a critical edition that will not only be in print format, but also in digital. Is it possible for the Dorico team to create the option for a custom Segno symbol??

We are specifically interested in what we think is called the ā€œSegno Serpentoā€

I can of course create some kind of custom character and smash it onto the scores, but for digital playback (and all kinds of reasons) it would be really cool if it would be possible for that symbol to actually mean something to the engraving program (and music xml/mei) for playback and analysis purposes.

Whaddya think??

Why not use a regular segno, create a custom glyph, and hide the regular segno for the purpose of playback?

Dan … because having the option to make custom repeat symbols/segno would be more elegant. For the purposes of music xml and working with interchange language, there may be an advantage to having this kind of customization become part of the system, combining visual and machine elements, rather than having an essential visual element that is added as the kind of layer that will almost surely be dropped the second you put it into music xml.

To me it’s the difference between having the ability to make custom key signatures (dorico) and hack visual key signatures (sibelius 7.5 and earlier). I had to create figure scores for a book about klezmer music where we wanted to use the correct/customary modal key signatures. Having to do it in Sibelius with a visual key signature that didn’t actually make the notes sound they way they should introduced a massive opportunity for errors to creep in because the notations couldn’t be checked via sound.

I’m pretty sure this has already been requested… Like four years ago or more. I suppose it’s still not at the top of the priorities list…

Any news about this Daniel? The Segno does still look so smaller in D5.1.

No, there haven’t been any developments in this area since this was last discussed.

I think I have set the size to 180% in Engraving options>Repeat markers and saved as default, for quite some time now. And I am ok with the result

How I missed this? :joy: Yeah! the right solution. Merci bcp qd mm!

Yes! Thats it, I searched in Library-Music Symbols, but to no avail!
thanks, for me 150% is ok

Welcome to the forum.

You can use the custom scale property to make it larger.
segno

The segno size is 100% unacceptable. Not only should Elements users have access to scaling properties, but, in what world is a microscopic Segno acceptable? None. It’s very important that musicians are able to see this sign. And, the only fix given is to increase not only the size of the Segno itself but literally ALL repeat text? So we have to live with either making our Segnos (and codas, etc) microscopic, or looking like idiots because our DS al Coda is GIGANTIC. For the most part, Dorico works pretty well, but little things like this are absolutely boggling to me. This is a very basic sign and I don’t understand in the slightest why this is even an issue.

Did you see the post directly above yours? Even in Elements, you can use the Custom Scale property to change the size of the segno. Make sure you have ā€œSet local propertiesā€ set to Globally when you do this, so that it affects all layouts.

Thank you, I didn’t see that.

I agree it is smaller than anything I would do, but some of that depends on the font.

In addition, I have played some marches and polkas in quickstep format that do use very small symbols.

As others have mentioned, there are ways to achieve the size you wish, even with Elements. I’d like to add, for the benefit of new users, I found the factory/favorite buttons a bit confusing and was always afraid to use that because I do music in many styles, genres, cultures, traditions, so I have no single default.

I have found it most productive to develop a xxx.dorico file for each type of project I do a,d use that as my starting point for any new score of that type.. And the Library manager is brilliant for keeping all of that up to date.
