Set default file format for Slices

I’m using graphic slices a lot when creating my teaching material and it is a great tool, but there is one little inconvenience. For every slice I have to set the file format and resolution. Would it be possible to implement a global setting for this in the future?

That would be great ! + 1

I believe this has been suggested before and I made a note of it at the time. We will try to implement this at some point in the future.

Sounds great Daniel, looking forward to the next update whenever it shows up!

Is there any update on this feature request from 2021? We would like to export .svg files for what will be a significant number of slices. Having to manually select what we want for every single slice is a recipe for error and repetition.

?? thanks, JW

I’m afraid as yet there’s been no change in this regard, but it remains on our list of things to implement in future.

Another +1 for making this possible, along with an option where a single slice could have the filename of the file. Remembering the file format (and for PNG the resolution) and having a sensible default for one slice were all things Finale was stronger at. Though Finale did not have a concept of “default” here, but “last used values” was close enough for those of us working on large projects (like music textbooks) and did not have the transparency (T/F) option.

Being able to specify “overwrite without prompting” would also be a small but real time saver if it’s easy.

Where Dorico absolutely shines here: remembering slices(!). The time I’m losing by setting a new slice, PNG, 600 DPI, name of the slice same as FN, destination folder same as file, gets made up the first time I notice an error in the score, need to make a change, and re-export. By the time I notice errors twice, or need to pixel-perfectly replace a faulty prior example with a new one, I’ve more than made up for not having this feature.

(it looks like there might be a Lua or other way to make my dream workflow possible: an override to File->Save that automatically exports audio in mp3, exports the slice(s), creates a PDF, and exports MusicXML. Now if only it could also re-upload everything to S3, I could discard 2/3 of my work scripts).

Follow up for about and just to document for others, the concept of filename “recipes” and “ingredients” do not work for Slices.

If this worked (with templates and a way to default to “same folder as project” in Templates, it would make a big difference in my workflow,

I appreciate that this might work for some users – and glad it would for you, but adding this would actually be a nightmare for our work. we need to identify things both by slice and by additional names that would never be in the ‘token’ system in Dorico. Having to navigate the token system for file names (and the fact that what we put in doesn’t stay with individual Dorico files) is another massive time sink for us because it leads to incredible inconsistency in file names and tons of mistakes. Please don’t @me about using the token system. == It doesn’t work for my needs.

Looks like this request is 3 years old now. I too would prefer different defaults for graphics slices. Any update?

same question!
