Set up / instrument change- does not change

After condensing, I check all notes that I want to make a2 rather than showing two separate notes or flags. It might be simple as you say, but manually clicking a note that I want to insert the condensing change > going to the Condensing Change menu > clicking the instrument > clicking OK takes three steps at least. And I have to do this for every note I need to insert the change for all condensed staff. This is still something I feel chores, can be improved. As I often see in the tutorial videos, Dorico recommends setting my default preferences in the Layout/Engraving/Notation options at first, then overriding some local settings as needed. I really like this idea and want to do the same thing for condensing.

Note that you can alt-click condensing changes (any signpost, actually). It might give you some speed.

Thank you for the info! However, it seems not to be working for me. I mean, option-clicking (as I am using Mac) a note only selects the note in a normal way. Am I missing something?

Yes, you have to be in write mode to copy condensing changes.

Sorry, I get confused. So is this about copy&pasting? If so, what does option-click copy? Also, in Write mode Dorico won’t allow clicking a note.

Option-click or Alt-click copies whatever is selected to wherever you click (on a staff). It goes on the nearest beat position according to the current grid setting. The selection can be notes, text, meters, other markings, signposts, most anything.

If you can’t click to select a note in Write mode, it must be a condensed staff in page view. Edits to condensing instruments should either be done in galley view, or turn off condensing to access them in page view.

Ah, Galley view! Of course, I can click a note in Galley view! However, I still do not get the whole idea. What I understand so far based on the above replies (thank you all btw) is that I can copy whatever is selected and paste it elsewhere. So I option-clicked a note or the signpost of condensing change, then clicked a new location I wanted to paste, then command+p to paste. Nothing changes.

The sequence is:

  1. Select something (make a normal selection)
  2. Navigate to your target location
  3. Opt-click on your target location to paste the selection
  4. Move to another location and opt-click will create another copy of the selection
  5. repeat as often as you like.

The difference is that Alt-click doesn’t even use the regular clipboard. No Copy and Paste commands; it’s just direct, within Dorico.

It worked! Thanks a lot. Condensing instruments create lots of unnatural notation and markings that need to be manually fixed, but this is a very handy shortcut in general. I think I am bringing up lots of topics that were not originally tied to this thread, so I should raise new tickets for further questions about condensing.
