SETTING UP 2 MOTU 828 MK IIs - ADAT OPTICAL

I recently purchased 2 MOTUs (828 MK II) on ebay for very little money.


I Successfully set them up by daisy chaining them with Firewire to my MacBook pro 2012.
Motu 828 MK II ( Slave ) >FW > Motu 828 MK II ( Master ) >FW> My Computer.

Im using MOTU ASIO Universal Drivers (Latest)
The latency is ridiculously high at (Input: 12.608 Out Put: 23.356).
I tried reducing the buffer rate but I get Pops and Crackles.
Direct Monitoring Makes no Impact on the high Latency.

So Ive decided to see if I can connect the Two MOTUs by - ADAT OPTICAL - to check if my latency improves.

  1. What would be the physical Connections for ADAT Optical ?
    MOTU MK II #1 PRIMARY > FW > My Computer (Correct?)
    MOTU MK II #1 PRIMARY > (OPTICAL IN or OUT ? ) > SLAVE
    MOTU MK II #2 SLAVE > (OPTICAL IN OR OUT ?) > MASTER

  2. AFTER a successful ADAT OPTICAL setup ,
    Would my > MIDI < , all inputs and outputs including Mic-Pre and headphones become available in my DAW?

  3. What is the downside to ADAT OPTICAL vs Firewire ?
