Hi! I need a slide whistle in my score. And I like it notated with definite pitches, 8va (like a piccolo).
I’ve managed to find a sound and make one, but 2 issues:
It’s displaying all notes on middle line. How to get a regular 5-line pitch setup?
I’ve found a Helion Whistle sound that seems usable, but the least of editing I do on the instrument, and the sound is gone. How do I do this right?
For #1, I’m assuming that you had duplicated a percussion instrument to create your custom Slide Whistle? In the top right corner it says it is belongong to “unpitched percussion” so that is why it is not able to move up and down the staff. You may be able to remove it from that family but I am not 100% sure if that will fix it, if not I advise simply duplicating a piccolo as your starting point to create your custom instrument, so it would otherwise act and behave like one but with the unique name of Slide Whistle etc. If that presents difficulties in sharing with a percussion player such as your timpani, then I would suggest to duplicate a tuned percussion which is also set an octave higher, like Xylo or Glock etc.
I am not sure about #2, but I would have to guess fixing #1 might help as well as checking out your expression map etc.
Hi @GeirSol, the suggestions by @wing are absolutely correct.
Here a Project with Slidewhistle from Halion Sonic. I created a new Slidewhistle instrument (duplicating a Piccolo, and changing the names), saved as default (with the star icon). I loaded that instrument into a player in Setup mode, then in Play mode loaded an Halion Sonic VST instance (from the VST and MIDI panel), loaded the whistle to the first slot in HS, assigned the HS VST to that track (from the Track inspector panel), saved the Endpoint Configuration (clicking on the gear icon of the Track inspector) with one midi channel, and the whistle sound loaded in HS, and the Default expression map, and renamed the Endpoint Configuration to something like Slidewhistle. Then in Playback Templates, I duplicated the Iconica Sketch Playback Template, added manually the Slidewhistle Endpoint Configuration and put it on top of the list (you can also duplicate Note performer PT and add it there, if you use NP), and renamed the PT with a shorter name and no dots or spaces (there are some issues otherwise, where the exported PT file will be not univocally be recognised as a new PT, when imported).
In Setup you can then drag the whistle into the timpani player. You will not be able to combine them into a kit, being the whistle a pitched instrument (woodwinds family). But you can use instrument changes in Layout Option to have it alternating with the timpani, in your layout.
Here a Dorico File example, and the Playback Template (for Iconica Sketch + whistle), that you can import into the Playback templates, and apply.
Thanks a lot Wing!
Manged to download your files, and having it play correctly. Saved a Playing Template Noteperformer + Slidewhistle. Adding Slidewhistle as default instrument.
Had some trouble changing instrument to yours, but that was because it lacked family.
Working, and maybe more important: I start to understand how this works. So, hopefully I’ll be more confident in getting my sounds to taste.
