Setting up an expression pedal

Hey folks,

I am trying to set up my Yamaha fc7 expression pedal for use with Cubase. I’m connecting it through my Komplete Kontrol keyboard’s expression port. The pedal works great, but the scaling is way off. It’s really hard to describe but it’s not a smooth interpolation. From the down position, there’s very little room to control the input before it reaches max value when the pedal is barely a quarter up.

Hopefully I’m explaining it enough… What is the best way to get my pedal setup for Cubase?

Thanks!

Before you think about settings within Cubase, you should clarify whether the Komplete Kontrol keyboard has been set up appropriately for your FC7 expression pedal.
You can read how to do this here:
How to Configure Sustain / Expression Pedals on KOMPLETE KONTROL Keyboards – Native Instruments (native-instruments.com)

If the control range is optimally set, you can change the behavior in Cubase, e.g. via the input transformer.

I did that as described and the port was already selected as CC#11. I would like to use the foot controller to control a group track’s volume but I don’t think I can use the input transformer for that.

Hi,

How do you do that? Do you use Quick Controls?

This is quite easy to do with an easy Surface Editor MIDI Remote too. I personally use my keyboard this way. I have made a MIDI remote, in which the Expression pedal is represented by a big Mod Wheel, and the Damper pedal by another (ok, it is a switch actually, but I like the depiction of those modwheels.)

For the main page, in the mapping assistant, I don’t have the expression pedal assigned to anything. And then, I can either quickly right click a parameter and assign it to the expression pedal on a whim, or I could do a more permanent setup, as @Ryder wants for example, to always control the volume of a group or a specific channel.

That’s what I’m asking, how to be able to set it up that way.

What are you talking about “Surface Editor Midi Remote”? Are you talking about some vendor Surface Editor, or the Cubase one? If you’re talking about the Cubase one, I cannot change the message type to be a mod wheel.

There’s no curve setting to be able to control the translation, since I can barely move my controller from the bottom before it barely reaches like #100. It’s very sensitive.

Hi,

Do you use Cubase 12, please? If yes, open the MIDI Remote tab in the Lower Zone. Click the Add button and create your custom device.

No no no, sorry if I’m confusing… I know how to create custom midi instrument scripts and how to assign them, my question is how can I make it so that I can control volume on a group track without my foot controller being so sensitive. There’s no curve setting to control the smoothness, I can barely move the pedal up a bit from the down position before it almost reaches maximum.

Hi,

MIDI Remote scripts are not the Patch scripts.

What’s a patch script?

Hi,

What do you mean by this, please?

This page might help you to start with the MIDI Remote and the Mapping Assistant.

And this page is about the patch scripting.

I know how to use the Midi Remote Manager in Cubase 12 to setup my Yamaha FC7 to control a knob in Cubase. It’s adjusting the sensitivity of it that I’d like to know how to do.

Sounds like you need to calibrate the expression pedal in the KK software.

I must be dumb… I’m in Komplete Kontrol right now but can’t see that button. I see the scale and and arp buttons but I don’t know how to get to the screen shown on the picture.

The manual describes everything perfectly. It’s under “Configuring the Pedal Input for an Expression Pedal”.

I am looking in the Komplete Kontrol Manual and it doesn’t talk about midi editing. It only talks about connecting it.

Read the manual. I even gave you the name of the chapter you should be looking for.

It’s because this issue likely doesn’t have anything to do with MIDI.

Komplete Kontrol S-Series MK1 Manual, correct? Am I reading the right manual?
