setting up windows midi

a friend was over with his cubase / win8 daw system, and wanted to use an audio interface with an actual midi to midi (no usb to midi) connection to receive midi data inside cubase (focusrite scarlett 18i8). however cubase, under device setup > midi > midi port setup, where i am used to seeing windows midi ports using my DAW / RME interface, was showing no windows midi ports. i wonder if you could point me in the right direction on how to enable these – his interface drivers seemed to have been correctly in place otherwise, as cubase was playing audio using the scarlett’s native ASIO driver. thank you.

Close Cubase.
Find the directory “midi port enabler” and move the 2 zero byte files one level up.
Start Cubase and hopefully all MIDI ports are showing.

cheers, the age-old steinberg trick! so convenient.
