I guess I’m not the first to ask this question. I’ve seen some people asking this question for a few versions now. But short trills still don’t work in Dorico 6??
It’s a great software, but I find it crazy that apart from the basic trill (Tr), the others don’t work at all. Maybe I’m the one who misunderstood their use…
Most ornaments have not yet been implemented in Dorico. One solution is to write them out in a hidden staff and suppress playback of the corresponding note on display.
It’s still surprising that the ornaments are implemented in writing but that we still can’t hear the sound result after 6 versions. Do we know the reason?
Because the team can only do so much with each version. There remains a huge list of notation and playback features that are still to be implemented.
People used to complain about the lack of fermata playback, until it was added to Dorico.
Now, it’s ornaments. When ornament playback is fully implemented, the complaints will move to the next thing!
The difference between fermata and ornaments (from the user’s point of view) is that it is way easier to work around the limitations on ornaments (see the workaround with hidden staff which gives a perfect rendition, as long as you know how to write it out explicitly) than around the lack of fermata playback. My 2c.
Seems to me it’s much easier to do a workaround for fermatas than for trills. For a fermata, a couple quick changes to existing settings and it’s done. For trills, it would be creating a whole separate instrument and getting its playback settings duplicated exactly before even entering the trill notes — of which there could be lots in many types of music. Since long trills are already implemented, the coding exists in the software. How hard could it be to duplicate that with short trill defaults? While I appreciate the exquisite control for ornaments that a hidden staff could provide, when doing quick mock-ups on a deadline, the lack of playback for short trills and other ornaments is frustrating.
