Show drum part in Score Editor?

Hi. I’ve created a drum midi part using a VSTi and I cannot get the score editor to see any part of the midi drum part. I have tried Ctrl+R / Opening the Score editor directly neither shows the midi events as notation. I have the midi track selected - NOTHING. I have the midi part selected - NOTHING. The drum editor sees the track name and there is the appropriate number of bars but no data whatsover?

However, if I use a piano midi track the data is there. Is this a bug or am I missing something. Cheers Jon

Sorted. I needed to change the instrument to drums in the Score editor. Weird how Cubase didn’t recognise it as a drum track though. Cheers Jon

good that you sorted it out.

For me (hope you hear Steinberg), however, this is a case that shows that the Cubase14 Score Editor is more oriented towards (classical) notes (Patitur). In a DAW, however, it is more about having the option of displaying DAW data in a musical notation. The Cubase14 Score Editor should be more flexible and not so instrument-oriented in its display. In a DAW, there could be data that has nothing to do with a (classical) instrument.

best regards

The detection of the instrument type is driven by the track name. What was your track called? We intend to bring a for more heuristics into that mechanism in the future.

You also need to have a drum map set for that track, since that contains the settings about which notehead and voice to use for each component of the drum or percussion kit.

It’s not oriented towards any specific type of notations. However, it does indeed require to know the type of instrument, because that determines the number of staves and default clef.
For users that don’t want to pick a sepcific type of instrument, we’ve got a few sketch instruments that should cover any regular notation use case.

Drums are slightly special, because the Score Editor also needs to know the setup of a drum kit, which is why we need a drum map to be configured. Beyond that, it’s extremely simple to use.

In addition to Stefan’s comments, for users who need to continue to working on a project in Dorico, it is important to know which percussion instrument type is on each line of the stave

I also came across this exact problem, and was vexed that my imported music xml score displayed nil orchestral pecussion notes - despite both playback and the midi key editor working as expected. The solution was to “Change Instrument Type for the Active Track” in the Score menu to a non-entity named “sketch”. I dont see why there is not an available selection type for orchestral percussion per se - I had not encountered this problem in any other DAW or notation software I have used.

Are you talking about pitched or unpitched percussion? These have very different characteristics. A pitched percussion instrument can be displayed on a regular stave, but unpitched percussion is meaningless unless you have a drum map assigned, because the MIDI pitches used to play the instrument are completely different to the pitches you expect to see in the score.

If you have experienced this problem from a MusicXML score then that suggests that the scoring engine hasn’t been able to correctly identify the type of instrument, and so it doesn’t know if it’s pitched or unpitched percussion. MusicXML itself doesn’t represent this data.

Hello Paul, thanks for your reply, and apologies for my delay in responding. I was referring to unpitched Orchestral Percussion, which in other programs I have used CAN be shown on a normal stave, with multiple different instruments represented by various pitches. What surprised me about Cubase 14, was that suddenly such a set up in my score was BLANK!, despite sounds playing, and being visible in a key and drum editor. So, it appears that with the adoption of Dorico protocols, it is now mandatory to have predefined percussion instruments with drum maps? Ok, I will explore this further.

Cheers, Frank

Could you attach a MusicXML file here that shows the problem? (or send me a DM).
