Show MIDI lock events in key editor

Hi everyone,

I’d like to use the Key Editor with MIDI notes from other tracks visible only as a visual reference in the background, with zero risk that my edits could affect those other parts.

I tried locking tracks in the Inspector and also using Lock Events with the “Other” option, but I can’t figure out how to make those locked MIDI events from other tracks actually appear in the Key Editor as uneditable background notes while I’m editing the active part.

Is it possible to display MIDI events from other tracks in the Key Editor while they are locked, purely for visual guidance?

If yes, could you please share the exact settings/steps to make this work?

My goal is simple: see other tracks’ notes in the background, but only the currently edited part remains editable.

Thanks a lot!

In the part editor, you can choose to select and edit a specific part only and also view the other parts at the same time. Just select all your midi parts in the project and open in key editor, then make the selection of any part as shown.

As @ckon says… that’s the method provided to accomplish what you’re after.

You can also show Global Tracks in the Windowed Key Editor, which can be useful.

Hi, thanks for the tip!

The issue I’m still running into is that if I click a MIDI note that belongs to another part, the editor switches the active part to that one (so the edit focus changes).

Is there a way to keep one specific part pinned as the active/editable part, while all other visible parts remain strictly unselectable in the background (even if I click on their notes)? If there’s a specific preference, tool, or Key Editor setting for that, I’d really appreciate the exact steps.

It’s not possible to lock the other parts while still viewing them all in the key editor. The only other thing I could suggest is to make all your parts different colours and then change ‘event colors’ to ‘part’ in the Key Editor, just makes the different parts easier to see and to make sure you select the one you want (and not change the part as a result)

Also, if you Lasso select, notes in the other part are not selected
