I’ve been looking online but couldn’t find an answer to this so just wanted to post here.
Is it possible to show one instrument part on all instrument parts? For example, I want to make rhythm exercises on a single line snare drum instrument, and just have that part show for all instruments. I tried inserting it as a flow in another instrument part but it did not work.
Michael, in Dorico Setup it helps if you think of the real world situation:
How many players do you have?
Which instrument is held by which player?
These two basic questions normally help
solving the logic of the setup.
So you have more than one player?
Each of those players should hold a snare drum?
Or do you have a different real world setup?

Thanks for the response. It is for a method book, sorry I forgot to mention that. So in the method book in this particular section of the book, I am looking to just include just one instrument in the score that shows the rhythm exercises as opposed to every single instrument so it’s not redundant. And then I would just remove the instrument name for each part. Does that make sense? Thanks for the help.
I would then go to Setup Mode into the right panel and create part layouts. Select a part layout and assign only the snare drum to it, by selecting and ticking the player/instrument on the left panel.
Another method is to right click a layout
and select the player/instrument in the right click menu.
I am just thinking: do you have a drum kit containing a snare drum - and you only
want to show that instrument?
I did that, and then I tried to enter that snare part into the score but it did not show up.
So the exercise book is for one player only?
You have setup that player to hold a few instruments?
Now you want a layout for another player who just holds a snare drum?
Can you upload your project - reduced to one or two flows only, so we understand your setup?
No, it is for an ensemble- general concert band for middle school. For the score, which will be the teacher book, I’d like to show just the snare drum part as opposed to all of the instruments for the rhythm exercise section so it’s not redundant and take up many pages for this section. I attached a screenshot of the first page of the score. I plan on adding 60 exercises, but as you can see, the first 2 and a half take up the first page, so in the end it’s going to turn into 30 or so pages in the score (teacher book) if I keep this format. But if I just add the snare drum part, it will take up only like 4 pages.
When you initially setup this project you should already have a snare drum part layout. If for some reason that is not existent, you make an additional part or score layout just connecting to the snare drum, and connecting to all flows (exercises) you want to have included.
Yes I already had a snare drum part made before I started the project. I am not understanding sorry, the goal is to have just the snare drum part show in all of the parts- for example, flute, alto sax, etc, and the score. Then from there, I will edit the name. The name of the part is irrelevant, the snare drum part is important because it’s a non pitched instrument that I want to show for the rhythm exercise section for the score and all band parts.
What I’d do is to have a separate snare drum player (not the real perc players) for the rhythm examples and include that player in all layouts.
In the flows for the rhythm examples, include only the special player. Remove that player from all other flows.
I believe that should do what you want.

Yes, but the reason I suggested to use a special player for the rhythm exercises was so that the actual perc parts wouldn’t end up in the sax book and make a mess.

Just for me to understand:
Does this mean each part will have its own system plus the snare drum system next to it?
A combined part?
Or is there another idea behind it?
The idea is that there are rhythm exercises where the rhythm is the only thing in those flows. (A single staff in all layouts: both score and parts.) For the rest of the book, everyone have their normal parts.
So nothing speaks against combined part layouts, and manually hiding the snare drum system in the flows where it is not wanted. Let us keep it simple

I made a new snare drum instrument in “players” and I tried connecting that to the full score by itself, but it did not work. Also, I watched a Dorico video on players, and what it was doing was similar to what I wanted, so I followed the directions and it said to make a custom score layout and add only that part, and so I did that. Now I have a custom score option, but it’s completely separate from the full score, where I want this custom score layout on a particular page in the full score.
It looks like I figured it out. I just hid the instruments visibility in the score, and then now just have the snare drum part for this flow only. Now I am trying to change the snare drum instrument just for the score- I tried to manually edit it, but it also changed the name for the individual part. Is there a way to just change the name of the instrument in the score only?
Edit: So now I figured it out, I added a snare drum part to the flute part to try it out, and wrote the exercises out in that flow only, and now it’s only showing what I want which is just the snare drum part. Thanks for the help everyone!
You can let Dorico do the work for you:
For the Full Score layout, go to Layout Options, go right down to the Vertical options and Staff Visibility. There you have three options. Have a look and you will figure out how to hide all empty staves in this layout.
