SL Pro 12 always crashes when Unmixing Song

Hi there,

Spectra Layers Pro 12 always crashes when trying to unmix a song.

Configuration:

  • Win 11 up-to-date
  • Antelope Zen Quadro audio interface, up-to-date driver
  • AMD Radeon RX 6600 GPU, up-to-date driver

I’m trying to unmix a 30 seconds mp3 song with only drums, bass, guitar, synth. SOmething very basic, right?

After a few seconds, the app just crashes, with no error message.

I’ve tried with no success:

  • using the GPU or the CPU
  • the 3 different quality options
  • bypassing the preview

It’s a nightmare. Unmixing is the main reason why I purchased SL Pro 12.

I had the same problem with SL pro 11 and the support ticket I created went nowhere (the support guy didn’t know SL Pro 11 at all). But in SL Pro 11, I had one way to make it work: select GPU, select Low quality, reboot the PC and run SL Pro 11 right after the reboot. It usually worked (not always though). It no longer works with SL Pro 12.

I’m super disappointed with SL Pro at the moment. I hope someone will be able to help me understanding what’s wrong in my configuration.

Thanks in advance.

How much system RAM do you have? Check your RAM with something like the open-source memtest86+

I have 16 Gb of RAM.

Try running the Windows Memory Diagnostic, just to rule it out.

it said no RAM problem

There are other reports of SL 12 crashing with too little RAM, but also there are reports of it working fine with as little as 8GB RAM and a 6GB RTX 3050, albeit slowly.

Are you using the latest version (currently SL 12.0.40)?

If you go to the Help menu, you can open the Diagnostics Folder and check for crashdumps:

Thanks, I’ll check that later today.

I think I’m waaaaay underpowered compared to most here…but I do have 64GB RAM…I’ve never had an unmixing crash in SLP…all my SLP crashes have been while manual editing or selecting too much with harmonic selection tool. I’ve had several crashes with clone stamp tool large brush size with preview on, yet, Seems Robin fixed the clone stamp tool with 12.0.40 build433.

I’ve tried unmixing a song on an old laptop dual CORE processor 4 gb ram!
SAMSUNG RV510 it took forever but it worked. :joy:

I can confirm I’m using SL Pro 12.0.40.

My gut feeling is there is a compatibility problem with the AMD GPU, but it does not explain why it also crashes when I use the CPU mode.

Something strange I’ve noticed in the logs: I’ve configured my Antelope Zen Quadro in the Settings, but SL still tries to open my old Focusrite Scarlet, that is no longer connected to my PC.

I have some Cubase crashdumps, but I have no SL crashdumps in the dump folder.

Please note that I’ve no problem with all other SL functions, it’s just the unmixing that always crashes. Which is a pity because I’ve mainly purchased the pro version for the unmixing feature (that is now free but poor qulaity in Cubase 15).
I think the fact I had the same issue in SL Pro 11, but it worked after a reboot is the best path to explore. I purchased SL Prop 12 hoping they would have solved this issue, but it is even worse, it no longer works after a reboot.

Please note I’ve not tried to unmix directly from Cubase in ARA mode because this generates huge Cubase projects files that are unmanageable.

Is there a setting against “AI Processing Device” in the System preferences called “Use Shared Memory”?

Try changing that, restarting SL and see if it makes any difference.

You could be right, I seem to remember someone else having a problem with an AMD GPU, however there are also reports of problems with NVIDIA GPUs as well. Either way, a crash is bad.

It might just be listing the ASIO drivers. Try changing to WASAPI, it works just as well.

“Use Shared Memory” box was unchecked, I checked it with no positive result.

I also tried WASAPI, with no positive result either.

I’m not sure we users here can provide much more help on this one, so I’d suggest logging another support ticket. My feeling is that SpectraLayers 12.0.40 has a problem with AMD GPUs. Perhaps @Robin_Lobel can help?

Yes, I have submitted a new support ticket on Sunday, but I don’t have too much expectations from it, following my first ticket with SL Pro 11 one year ago.

And thanks a lot for your help, anyway.
