SL12 Unmix Soundtrack for NR Purposes

I have an old recording of a stainless steel salad bowl with water in and contact mic on the bowl. It is a live music performance that has always been detrimentally affected by clipping of the contact mic. I thought maybe Unmix Soundtrack would identify the clipping as film effects…so I tried it and Unmix Soundtrack separated about 70% of the clipping. The SL DeClip module (and other declippers I’ve tried in the past) fix the clipping, but the unwanted sound of OL distortion remained. It is big time starting point to repair this live performance. It was better than my manual attempts.

I wonder if it will work on other instruments?

I bet it will unmix the scene I just finished with car and dog barking that took about a month last year to manually unmix.

One thing’s for sure

OK, on a 10 min excerpt of that aforementioned live performance, Unmix Soundtrack took 40mins on High quality. CPU performance showing around 60% utilization, yet resource monitor showing all cores churning away just like Unmix Song and Drums.

This Unmix Soundtrack process seemed to do a similar job on the small section I tried earlier; yet in the worst cases of OL distortion, it didn’t do much if anything. It seemed to identify drum (roland octa pad) flurries as effects. I had expected this modules to identify the bowl as effects, but it ID’d the bowl as music.

On the bright side, where the fx separation NR has worked, it gives me a roadmap to manually eliminate the OL distortion, which is, again, an excellent starting point
