Slur vs tie vs frame break

Hi all

A composer sometimes has slurred pairs where the second of the pair is tied over many bars.

As long as the tied notes don’t extend to the next frame I can simply move the slur end-point in Engrave Mode.

But, if the ties do extend to the next frame this doesn’t work: I can’t delete/hide/make transparent the part of the slur that’s on the second page.

Any suggestions?

How do you change the slur end??? There is a property (available in both Write and Engrave modes) to end the slur at the beginning of a tie chain (instead of end), and of course these settings are available as global options in Engraving options (probably in the Ties tab). This does work as expected. Leave manual tweaking for minute details, that is how Dorico is designed.

Interesting, as Gardner Read in Music Notation has what essentially is “End on first note in a tie chain” as incorrect as seen in Jesper’s reply. However, Damian’s 10 tied measures to the end of his tie chain would create an absurdly long slur making “end on first note of tie chain” preferred by most. I lost my Gould to a student, but wonder if there is a general rule on how many tied bars it takes to use End of first note in a tie chain. I doubt we’d want the slur to cross a line or frame break… “In the eye of the beholder” I guess.

This option has always existed in Dorico. Since the very first versions were very much oriented towards Gould (one has to start somewhere) I doubt there is an absolute rule here. As you said
