A De-esser ANY De-esser affects the sound quality. I can hear a de-esser from miles away. I simply don’t like it.
Reason why I paint my “esses” out.

Same for “painting” the complete DIA track, by leveling the volumes you increase the intelligibility without using a compressor.
A compressor reduces the highest levels according a fixed threshold.
Painting out a DIA track reduces en raises the levels only in the specific places where it is needed.
And the most important reason … a compressor raises the noise floor of your DIA track.

One of the engineers who does that is also an award winner and has worked on shows you surely has seen and are know for having outstanding sound.
So, some people want to do the best possible job, and are therefore using Nuendo for the reasons you mention.
