Solo MIDI track / sends

Hi, soloing a MIDI track with MIDI sends doesn’t work as expected - the Instrument tracks (sends destination) aren’t soloed. If there’s any reliable reason for that behavior, the setting in preferences would be nice. The most expected behavior should be unmuting only audio part of the Instruments track, leaving the Instrument track parts muted…

Or maybe there’s a setting I can’t find?

Hi,

Where is the MIDI Track routed to? To an Instrument track or to a hardware?

Did you Solo in the Project window or in the MixConsole?

That has always bothered me. It’s not just the sends, even the primary output instrument track of the MIDI track doesn’t get soloed when you solo the MIDI track in the arrange window. MIDI tracks and Instrument tracks should work like audio tracks and group tracks when using solo.

It’s even worse than that. When you solo the MIDI track in the mixer or with a key command, the instrument track shows as muted in the arrange window but soloed in the mixer. It’s a schizophrenic instrument track . You should post this in the Issues section as a bug.

Hi,

There are few different cases regarding the Instrument track and Solo.

A) When you have an Instrument track with a single one Audio Return Channel (output), then by Solo in the Arranger/Project, you Solo the MIDI track, which feeds the Instrument. By Solo in the MixConsole, you Solo the Audio Return Channel. The consequence is:
If you route multiple MIDI Tracks to this Instrument track,

  • by Solo of the MIDI Track in the Arranger/Project, you really Solo the only one MIDI Track.

  • by Solo of the Audio Return Channel (the “MIDI Track” in the MixConsole), you Solo the whole Instrument, so you can hear all MIDI Tracks data routed to this Instrument.

B) When you have an Instrument track with multiple Audio Return Channels (outputs), then by Solo in the Arranger/Project, you Solo the MIDI track (same as it was in case A). By Solo in the MixConsole, you Solo the 1st Audio Return Channel of the Instrument (lets say Stereo Out for Steinberg instruments).
If you route multiple MIDI Tracks to this Instrument track and you in the Instrument itself, you set that the MIDI Channel 1 is routed to the Main Out (Stereo Out/The 1st output) and the other MIDI Channels are routed to it’s output (MIDI Ch 2 = Output 2; MIDI Ch 3 = Output 3; MIDI Ch 4 = Output 4…).

  • Solo MIDI Track 1 in the Arranger/Project Solos the MIDI Track and All Audio Return Channels of the Instrument in the MixConsole. Cubase doesn’t know, to which Audio Return Channel is this MID Track routed to. That’s an internal Instrument information, which is not passed over to Cubase.

  • Solo MIDI Track 2 in the Arranger/Project Solos the MIDI Track and All Audio Return Channels of the Instrument in the MixConsole.

  • Solo the Instrument track in the Arranger/Project Solos All Audio Return Channels of the Instrument in the MixConsole.

  • Solo Audio Return Channel 2 (HSSE Out 2) in the MixConsole Solos the channel and all MIDI Tracks. Cubase doesn’t know, to which MIDI Track is routed to this Audio Return Channel to. That’s an internal Instrument information, which is not passed over to Cubase.

  • Solo Instrument Audio Return Channel (HALion Sonic) in the MixConsole Solos the channel and all MIDI Tracks.

Think even about the Instrument track like 2 devices. One MIDI track at the input (Arranger/Project) and one Return Audio Channel as an output (in the MixConsole).
