Some basic questions

Hi all, I am new to Dorico (Long Time Cubase User). I have some very basic questions to understand key concepts of the program:

  1. What kinds of “output” can we produce with Dorico? (Obviously sheet music, midi files - but: Audio? if so, what file formats, etc.?)
  2. The play mode lets us set up quite very detailled settings for vsti-libararies/instruments and how to play them (expression maps) and how they sound (effects). Can these settings (or part of them) be reused in Cubase or even vice versa? (I could imagine a relationship with track templates, or at least imagine reuse of expression maps…)
  3. The functional overlap (which is quite natural) of the DAW and the notation/composition Software quite naturally lead to the question of “what to use for composing” (or: “What workflows are suggested if using both?”)

I am aware, this is a broad topic, but still…

Any answers, ideas, personal experiences are welcome and highly appreciated!

Open any project and choose File > Export > Audio to see what formats are supported.

You can import Cubase expression maps into Dorico, though not vice versa. Expression maps currently work quite differently between the two applications, and even having imported a Cubase expression map into Dorico, you will still have to do a fair bit of work to get things working as they should. Importing a Cubase expression map is a reasonable starting point.

Thank you, Daniel. This is a very valuable eye opener for me.
