This may be a stupid question but do I need a dedicated sound card when using the MR816 units? I am currently using and Edirol 2496 which has a PCI card…beings that the MR816 is firwire…does it do the same?

You do not need a pci interface with a mr816.
The firewire connection is the interface between the daw and te device.
