Spectral Layers 12

When will SL 12 be out? In June is it?

SL11 was end of summer last year…why do you want a new full version already? Makes no sense to me

That would indeed be nice. I am also waiting for a more reliable version of SL.

Looking at previous releases (at least according to my own upgrades bought) SpectraLayers 12 could indeed be available in June or July 2025.

Steinberg releases updates every year. Spectral Layers has been updated to a new version every year from version 8. So it does make sense. I was just trying to remember if it was June or April.

It makes a lot of sense to me

I bought SpecraLayers just for source separation. Only when I upgraded to v11 did I start exploring the other tools. Now I’m starting to get an overview of these tools, and I use them daily and get better and better…

The quality of source separation only changes/improves with each integer upgrade of SpectraLayers, so I always hope for better quality and more instruments.

Big wish from me is that noise/hiss (and coughing) can be separated out to its own layer…

BIG “SpectraLayers 12” wish list for me would be an elevation of instrument isolation to the level of vocal isolation/separation and drum isolation/separation. Namely, separating multiple guitar tracks; better bass isolation and separation of bass upper frequencies from guitar sections; less keyboard-bleeding into guitar sections and vice versa, and a LOT less leftovers in the “other” category that have to be manually separated and then redistributed among various other stems.

In many cases, I have found that versions 8 and 9 are far better at isolating lower frequency bass-guitar sections than either version 10 or version 11, which sometimes leave all bass-guitar sections completely un-isolated, or more often leave huge chunks of bass-guitar “missing” for no apparent reason.

Every new release of SpectraLayers is a leap forward in technology and usefulness, and I always look forward to SL releases with much more excitement than any other Steinberg product that I own, such as Nuendo, Cubase Pro, The Absolute Collection, etc.

I can’t wait to see what amazing developments are to come for SpectraLayers.

Sl 12 is the only fun I have in my life.

I notice sometimes when I unmix a song it will isolate an instrument but not always isolate it all properly. Like, some guitar will be isolated properly in some time frames, but other time frames the guitar will be mixed into a different stem. I wish I could inform SpectraLayers what time frames it got right and wrong and have that help it to rework the stems properly. Or if there were more knobs to twiddle to try and help it understand what sounds actually belong in each stem. Like perhaps a preview mode where you could adjust knobs until the separation is most reasonable.

Have you tried second pass of separation? Might sometimes work..

wouldn’t that be great…for any sounds, really…time will tell

Same.

I have had times where, for example, a sax solo will start in the vocal track, move to the guitar track, and then finally to the horn track.

Or the vocals start in the guitar channel and then eventually move to the proper vocal channel.

Similar results with the “Unmix Crowd Noise” function.

Agree that there should be some way to “train” it to highlight the saxophone portion and say “You got this wrong, please move this to a different instrument track”.

I also wish there was some way to dial up or down the intensity or aggressiveness of the Unmix function – kind of like the Noise Reduction (or some of the functions in Adobe Photoshop).

I always separate vocals off the track first and then separate the individual instruments, it gives you way better results

yep, simples

for those here just wanting to run modules
get to know the manual tools

unmix vocals; then manually bring the rest of the vocals that were missed (brush tool!, harmonics tool might be problematic). Users could use harmonics selection copies to use as a guide for the brush tool.

also with unwanted noises; separate the speech/ vocals manually before whittling thru the rest
