SpectraLayers 12.0.30 Maintenance Update

I can report that SL 12.0.30 Standalone does not crash on my new system when using “Unmix Song”

MacMini M4 Pro, 14Core, 64Gb Ram, 2TB SSD, Sequoia 15.7.1

I still have to test it on my PC setup…..

Robin, can you please explain why Logic can UnMix very quickly and at very high quality but SL 12 can’t? Thanks

Song unmix high quality on 12.0.30 still crashes on my system with VRAM memory maxxed out. I have an 8gb 5060 GPU.

Using latest Sept 2025 nvidia drivers. Tried both creator and gaming drivers.

You know that Windows has the Snipping Tool to make screenshots?

Using my PCs NVidia 3050 reliably crashes Song Unmix high quality since version 12.0.20, and this has not changed with version 12.0.30. So on my PC I can only use significantly slower CPU rendering.

But my AMD CPU/GPU notebook rendering uses the GPU without any problems, and in first tests seems to render even faster than before with 12.0.30. Can that be?

Looking at this thread, something really odd seems to be happening with lots of NVidia GPU setups.

On my PC setup, my GPU is a Palith GeForce RTX 3050 KalmX Passive and i had to alter the standard settings because i had massive DPC spikes. As a side note, Nvidia GPU’s can cause a lot of problems in DAW setups, that’s for sure…

dezzo, which settings have you changed?

In the NVIDIA Control Panel :

  1. VSYNC: OFF
  2. Low Latency Mode: ULTRA
  3. Power Management: Prefer Maximum Performance
  4. Tripple Buffering: OFF

Driver Version: 581.29

On my PC i also have to report, that “unmix song does not crash SL. I’ve tried different song lengths and it worked.

RTX 3050 8 GB here. Driver 576.80. Only changed Prefer Maximum Performance.

Doesn´t crash here. Uses all 8Gb GPU + up to 13Gb shared memory

I wonder that the difference is with your machine that causes it to not crash.

in my 5060 8gb gpu vram gets allocated and about 4gb shared memory, it sits for a while then crashes

Can you try with older nvidia driver(i.e 576.80) to see if that is the culprit?

Windows 11 Home 24H2 (26100.6725)
AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
RAM 32,0 GB
RTX 3050Ti 4 GB here. Driver 581.29 Studio. Only changed Prefer Maximum Performance.
Doesn´t crash here. Uses all 4Gb GPU + up to 18Gb shared memory

Would be interesting to see if people with lower VRAM GPUs and crashes have disabled this setting CUDA - Sysmem Fallback Policy:

System Memory Fallback for Stable Diffusion

In driver 536.40, we implemented a new method to allow an application to use shared memory in cases that exhausted the GPU memory. This enabled applications which previously crashed when running out of GPU memory to continue to run, albeit at lower speeds. The switch to use shared memory occurs when running close to maxing out GPU memory to allow for a seamless transition.

Stable Diffusion happens to require close to 6 GB of GPU memory often. This can cause the above mechanism to be invoked for people on 6 GB GPUs, reducing the application speed. In driver 546.01 and above we added a setting to disable the shared memory fallback, which should make performance stable at the risk of a crash if the user uses a setting that requires more GPU memory.

Also is ReBAR set to on or off?

@dezzo

Thanks for the settings.

Tried them, but the settings didn’t prevent crashing: everything as before. So your 3050 doesn’t crash with GPU activated for rendering, but mine does, despite same driver version as yours.

Weird…

Just to add my status:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB
(Driver version: 32.0.15.7628 / 576.28)
Control Panel settings (I’ve never touched these):
VSYNC: Use the 3D application setting
Low Latency Mode: Off
Power Management: Optimal power
Triple buffering: Off

Never had any crashes.

Unmixed a 7:20 song to all instrument layers at High quality.
Took about 19 mins, using 100% GPU and about 14GB shared.

@Robert_Niessner I’ve tried all three options in the settings, and it makes no difference! The VRAM is almost fully utilized, about 11.5 of 12 GB, and the shared RAM is up to 9 GB, so about 20.5 GB in total, followed by a crash.
I’ve tried various driver versions (Studio and Game Ready), most recently the latest Game Ready driver 581.42 and the result is always the same, a crash!

@Robert_Niessner And by the way, of course I know the Snipping Tool! What do you think I used to take the screenshots in my previous post? The second image is a screenshot from a video, so it looks different!

Just to clarify.

Of course, you can have the unmixing done in consecutive steps. However, the results for each layer can vary considerably depending on the order.

I expect SL12 to handle the unmixing of all layers at a high quality without crashing, it did so before 12.0.20.

OK, so I have had some really interesting results on 12.0.30. Using it in ARA mode inside Cubase, I revisited an old song where I had previously unmixed the drum overhead stereo track in SLP 11.0.70 (I think). All the bad experiences here made me hesitant to update to 0.30, but I had some time to play around, and took the leap of faith, tempted by the allegedly superior results in this latest iteration of SLP.

So, to my astonishment, what previously took roughly as many minutes to unmix as the track is long, now was much much faster and the resulting unmixed track sounds a lot better than the old one, done in 11, with noticeably less artifacts.

The drum OH track I unmixed into Drums, Bass and Other. (I record my band live in our rehearsal space, and use SPL to get rid of the bleed from the other instruments into the drum OH mics.) This stereo track is app. 8 minutes long - and would have taken some 8 minutes to unmix, even in SPL 12.010 (which is the version I updated from). Using 0.30, this unmix process took all of 1 min 15 secs!

This is such an incredible improvement that it left me speechless. I have a rather lowly RTX 3060 gpu with 12 GB of GDDR6. SPL is set to Auto, using the gpu. My other specs are in my profile.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my exceptionally positive experience. All the issues reported here made me hesitant to even try updating, and I refrained from going to 0.20 for exactly this reason.

I am really really impressed.

Best,

Magnus

Did you install the Studio Driver as well ? NVIDIA stated that this driver does “something more” under the hood. I just try to find a needle in the heystack ….

@al808 Logic is a product developed by Apple, which only work on macOS. So they have access to all internal Apple resources, and they can afford training a model specifically for the mac platform and hardware, using purely Apple technologies, which won’t be compatible on other platforms and hardware.
SpectraLayers being cross platform and cross hardware, it has to rely on cross platform technologies, which can’t go as deep in the Apple tech stack as pure Apple technologies.

@Cubase-Erklaerbaer @Hooby2 @Frank_Perri @johncaf @jim_knopf can you try Unmix Song using this special build 12.0.31.432 ?

It limits VRAM use to dedicated VRAM, unless you explicitly check “Use Shared Memory” in Edit > Preferences > System > AI Processing Device.
