I’m keeping away from Splice. for a start they use Microsoft Edge and also this is now corporate (money, money money) whereas LABS was an open (Free) software.
I couldn’t care less what browser they use. I just use their rent-to-own system.
My question is in regards to going from Cubase 14 to 15 through Splice r2o.
I kind of understand that to a degree and that Steinbergs decision. So under that logic, which I do not disagree with. Then why hasnt Cubase15 been put on Splice yet?
With Bitwig and I have confirmed this with Bitwig customer service. If I start a rent to own subscription (which I do have) for Bitwig5, soon as Bitwig6 is released I will be automatically upgraded to Bitwig6, regardless if I have finished paying for Bitwig5.
The Splice R20 for Bitwig includes/extends the “Upgrade Plan” through the terms of the lease, with the caveat that B6 most likely must release during your lease period. The “extra year” you get with the 25 month lease is designed (one presumes) to accommodate this.
SB doesn’t have an “Upgrade Plan” SKU, so there’s no mechanism by which to build in license extensions based on date. That’s the difference. When “rent” C14 from Splice, you don’t own it until it’s paid off. That’s more a Splice directive than anything, but of course there’s some manner of “temporary license ownership” provision in the agreement between SB and Splice (again, a presumed, logical conclusion) that supports that.
Not to sound insensitive, but you shouldn’t have rented it, then. If you want C15, then pay off the R2O, complete the license ownership transfer, and then use that license to buy the upgrade. Only Splice and SB know if they will offer C15 through the R20 program, but whether they do or don’t doesn’t change your current agreement for C14. You could just stop paying for it and use something like PayPal’s payment system which is more like a credit purchase than a rental as you own the license when you make that purchase. If you default on it, that’s between you and PayPal - your SB licenses wouldn’t be affected because in that model SB gets their money up front and PayPal carries the debt.
Whether or not SB should offer a yearly “Upgrade Plan” SKU is a different question, and one with merit when one considers the current “smells like subscription” paradigm we’re currently in where you have to upgrade every year for current features, updates, and even bug-fixes, and that every year they will release a “for pay” major version whether or not the feature set supports “new version” expectations. Further, if you skip a year, you end up paying for it anyway when you upgrade over a skipped version. The only way around that is some nudge-nudge, wink-wink “buy on sale and wait for upgrades” hoping the unofficial “Grace Period” pays off. But that’s a different thread.
I’m in the same situation myself. I got C14 on the Splice RTO 2 weeks before 15 was launched. After a couple of months back and forth with Steinberg and also Splice, Although Splice wouldn’t confirm any dates, Steinberg have said 15 WILL be on Splice in Q1 of this year, so sometime between now and March - Hope this helps
Have you used Splice? When Cubase 13 was on Splice, they offer an additional 6 months o your total and you can start using Cubase 14. The same will happen with 15, no different than Korg Collection, Arturia Collection and anything that has an upgrade.
I have read that Steinberg will be updating Cubase 15 to Splice between January - March
He wasn’t talking about upgrade availability, he was talking about a FREE upgrade when he’s through paying for Cubase 14 and then owns the license. That’s a very different thing than what you’ve said above. When he finishes paying off the rent-to-own, at that point he’ll own the license and of course can use it to purchase an upgrade. The unknown is if SB support will see a “Cubase 14 license purchase date” AFTER the release of C15 and count post-release purchases (which normally can’t be done) as “within the grace period.” They very well may. But that’s different.
I don’t understand the inclusion of this statement. I didn’t render an opinion on Splice. I have an opinion, but it’s irrelevant.
Correct, he was talking about ownership and renting to own Cubase 15 from 14 upon Steinberg releasing 15 on Splice. You don’t own anything on Splice until payments are paid in full. Saying that, Splice adds on an additional 6-months so you can opt to upgrade and start using Splice
