Split Stem accidentals default

hi there, are there any preferences I can access with regard to the placement of the accidentals (for example, to put the natural sign next to the flat sign at the left of the chord?

I see I can go to the Engrave menu and in the preferences click the radio box for “Split Stem”, which will essentially do the opposite (i.e. unify a stem that has been by default split).

Any way around this?

thank you!

One way is to edit the tonality system and add a new accidental with pitch delta -1 which contains a flat glyph (U+E260) followed by a natural glyph (U+E261) with the X-offset of the second glyph set to 2. Then replace the flat on the left side of the split stem with the new accidental and hide the natural on the right side:

Let me know if you need more information on how to accomplish this.

Thanks, but this seems even more convoluted and time consuming, doesn’t it? Isn’t there a way to just not use the split stems by default? Must be, no?

Since the altered unison is part of a chord in which another note is only an interval of a second away, Dorico won’t allow you to avoid the split stem in this case.

it DOES allow me to do it (by toggling on the “Split Stem” radio button in the Engrave menu’s preferences), but as an exception not the rule. For a piece with a lot of these dyads, I’d have to click each one every time and toggle the radio button… there must be a quicker way…?

thank you!

Go to Library > Notation Options > Accidentals > Altered Unisons and change Appearance of altered unisons to Single stem.

ahh – that’s the exact thing I was looking for – thank you so much!
