Splitting long note into tie

Oh I see, that’s confusing, yes. I knew all the operations you described but got puzzled when I pressed enter.
But still I get “both notes” highlighted even with the caret and then a whole-note when I hit spacebar…

More puzzled than before…

If I select a note or notes, then use Shift+D, <, enter, then I too get a hairpin spanning the duration of the selected notes as in the gif below:
notes

The difference between that gif and the one a couple of posts earlier is that in the earlier gif, I typed Shift+D while the input caret was active. The input caret allows the user to input a dynamic wherever they want instead of at a selected element.

I got it, many thanks!
That was enigmatic!

You could always enter the half notes, select the second half note (or both), apply the hairpin, then select Force Duration and add the ties.

But personally, I’d just enter the forced, tied half notes and then place the caret where I wanted the hairpin to start and go from there.

I’m trying to follow this methodology.

I’ve got my grid timebase set as crotchet and I am inputting “< ff > p” or < ff>p " as you can see in the first screenshot. (I’ve tried different ways in different voices )

But whatever I do I get the same result.

The piano dynamic is not at the end of the measure (where I would like to place it) but on the third crochet.

what do I do wrong?

If you input a whole dynamic phrase into the popover when the caret is active, then each gradual dynamic only lasts for one crotchet. This is documented in the note at the bottom of this page:

You would need to input the phrase in sequence, and use the spacebar to advance the cresc/dim hairpins until you’re at the positions of first the ff, then the p.

Or, now they’ve been input, select the phrase and lengthen it.

Or just input exactly what you typed into the popover without the caret active? Dorico will automatically make it span the whole bar.

(PS the spaces being referred to aren’t for inclusion in the popover entry, but for after you close the popover)

thank you for your quick reply. In particular I didn’t know that Dorico would make it span the bar.

If the caret isn’t active, then the dynamic phrase will span the rhythmic duration of whatever you had selected prior to opening the dynamics popover.

In this case, a note that fills the bar.
