Splitting / reordering channels in multichannel file

Hi, new user here and still getting to grips with WaveLab Pro 12. In the mean time, there is something I need for my workflow already and I cannot figure out how to do it from the manuals or anywhere else. I work with ambisonics and other multichannel formats and I often need to remove channels from a poly .wav file and, in some cases, reorder them and add empty channels. Mostly, as a destructive edit on a (copy) of a multichannel audio file or batches of them. How can I do this in WL 12? Is there a way to easily delete, add and rearrange channels in the audio editor or is this not possible without re-rendering?

Would appreciate any help with this!

Thanks, Tim Bishop

You can create an audio montage from your file in the audio editor and rearrange or delete channels from the Montage. Suggest you work with cue markers for example - region markers.

In the Audio Editor, when you open 5 multi files on tabs, create montage from one file, there is an option “add to audio montage” on the other 4 tabs, which can add other audio files (tabs) to the montage. In the Montage, you can name region marker to the name of your multi file and render regions.

In the Audio Editor, it is possible to drag audio from adjacent channels/range to new tab/channels, (for example if you have a 4-channel file, you can select 3, drag to a new tab and create a 3-channel file - copy from one channel and paste to the other), change (add or take away) total number of channels, etc. but Montage workflow would be better.

Hi!

I think use a import multichannel format to Montage as source and edit e.t.c and save in new Multichannel Format(s)

check manual

I’m sure some else will have ideas in here…

Thanks both! I hadn’t thought about the Audio Montage so will give that a go. The dragging and dropping of consecutive channels in the Audio Editor also seems a good workaround. Maybe I should feature request to get a dedicated processor for this if there isn’t something already.

I think it would be nice to have a feature to delete or add channel and save according to number of channels in the audio editor.

I am not sure if this exists, a feature to select channels in the Audio Editor - for example select channel 2 and 5 from a 5-channel file would be good to have.

Also drag and drop from one channel to a new channel.

Yes, that’s pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Good to know it wasn’t already there hiding in plain sight at least!

I check this one more time, for example, you want to delete 2 channels from 5 channel file, when you select 3 channels, Shift+C opens selected audio on new tab. There you can double click any channel from old clip or new clip, copy and paste to other channels and save as a 3-channel file.

And when you want to add one or more channel in the Audio Editor making it 6 or 7, you can do it from here (Bottom right corner). WL adds an existing channel copy as a new channel.

The above can also be set to work with a shortcut as in the picture below.

It would be nice if channels can also be moved/swapped and audio copied/merged (in one step even though Shift+V works) like Montage in the Audio Editor for Multi-Channel Files.
