Square Jack - Rough Dry Mix - Seeking for general advice

Hello,

I’m working on my 2nd mix ever, just finished drums & vocals and general leveling.
I’ll be happy to get your impressions.

sounds good, personally I would lose what sounds like a very thin organ sound in the left side of the mix, it seems to fighting with everything around it, the brass seems to be the signature of this song and should be made nice and strong…good potential I think, Kevin

Has a nice live feel to it. I liked it.

Catchy tune! I agree with bringing the horns way up in the mix. I could also handle some type of horn or guitar solo during the middle section.

Drums and bass sound pretty good to me but I think the other instrument levels need a little tweaking.

Vocals are nice and strong. I think a little sprinkling of VSTs will smooth them out a little.

Looking forward to hearing an updated version.

Scott

@all Thanks for your interest and helpful advice!

@Kevin @Scott yes the organ was totally out of my view. The sound is rather cheap by itself (DI from Kork SP200 EP) and rather intended as background noise. I cut it a little bit with EQ, hope it fits better now.
The sax got more attention now, espcially automation in volume&panning. Now it’s louder but also showing its weak points. (needs maybe pitch correction and of course reverb - like everything)

@Early21 Your kinda right with the live feeling. The SAE students who recorded this messed totally up (they got the biggest studio in the house with PT Console aso.). So there was no time for tracking. Most instruments got only one take :open_mouth:

Nice song indeed!
I agree the middle section is really asking for a solo.

I will mention a solo, but recently we have no time to record.

first wet mix(maybe I should change the topic): SoundCloud - Hear the world’s sounds

listened again…I reckon the sax riff you have at 1.23 should also start the song and it should be BIGGER…it should sound like a section and the middle part makes no sense without a solo or vocal over it…music is hard work !!..keep on keepin on.

forgot this…the sax in the right channel is out of tune…

You mean the growling one?

I will ask for a solo…but as said…currently no time and no recording facility. We ourrself have only crap mics

Yeah the growling one…pity you don’t have the time or facilities to improve the song…

Good news: I spoke with our band leader. Solo is on the whish list and will be added asap (which means in some months). For now I will put in some VSTs. Hope I don’t have to start from beginninng with mixing

Just listened to the latest link (25). Much better. I’m wondering if maybe the drums could come up a little. Or maybe play around with some EQ on them to bring out a little more snap and sparkle (that’s highly technical terminology, I know). They sound a little muffled to me. Also maybe a little more high mids on the bass.

Maybe I’ll download it and have a go at some things to see if I can produce what I’m hearing in my head.

That middle section is still begging for something else going on for sure.

Keep at it! I like this song!

Dont worry, I’m still on it!
First a surprise: I accidently deleted some vocals while cleaning up, so the hole is now filled
Now we added strings to the mix and removed the first chorus.

I will see what I can do, but the drum recording is really bad by itself. We didn’t have a decent kit and the kick drum was 100% muffle in originnal.

Also maybe a little more high mids on the bass.

Thanks I will try it. Didn’t process the bass at all.

Maybe I’ll download it and have a go at some things to see if I can produce what I’m hearing in my head.

Do that  Would be really interested what you come up with!
I could pm you the wave file.

That’s a different song! It threw me off when the vocals didn’t come in right away. I like this arrangement better though I think.

I’m not sure what all you did (other than the obvious volume increase) but it sounds a bit more punchy and detailed to me now.

I just downloaded the mp3 of this one, but if you want to try to send me a wav that would be cool. I’m not sure what the size limit is for attachments, though.

I think it would be fun just to see how much different it sounds with some fresh ears and maybe a few different plugins.
