Staff-specific meter change deletes (some) double bars?

Hi smart people!

I’m sure there’s a better way to do what I’m doing—I kinda got started with (shift-M, meter, opt-Return) staff-specific meter changes before realizing how bloomin’ many of them I’d need in this piece—but while I ponder alternatives, can someone help me understand why Dorico would remove the double-bars from some staves (but not all) when a staff-specific meter change happens in a different staff?

The flow-wide meter here is interchangeable 6/8 - 3/4, and the instruments you’re looking at are two vocals, piano, bass, and drums.

Thanks for whatever wisdom you can share (and for holding mockery of my naivete to a minimum….)!

David, I think we might need a part of your project.dorico file to see what is going on.

I appreciate the extra eyes, @k_b !

Bare (DMGS3).dorico (2.7 MB)

Yes, your score is cluttered with local time signatures - without any specific reason (in my eyes*). All signposts visible, I would remove them all, unless there is a real meter change. If you have specific wishes for your beam grouping, I would concentrate just on them (Beaming menu).

  • After removing all those local time signatures you will see, how Dorico is dealing with it. May be not too bad? For the perspective of the players it is probably easier to have syncopated rhythms than constant (hidden) time signature changes. imho.

And to come back to your initial question, yes the bar-lines will be consistent afterwards. You will also see bar numbers re-appear in the System Track.

Sorry if this is unneeded advice but also keep this theme in mind if other things like Key Signatures and Chords are having similar issues (i.e. one staff isn’t changing).

Thanks so much, @k_b. I’m replicating the beaming from a previous edition, but obviously my internal Finale ➝ Dorico translator is on the fritz and I’m still learning the best way to accomplish particular goals. :winking_face_with_tongue: I’ll clean it up and try the smarter way of doing things!

I appreciate your time, wisdom, and kindness!

David, besides using the Beaming menu: applying „Force duration“ can be helpful at some places.
