Start repeat barline question

In the documentation, it says:

But this:

Results in this:

Why the end repeat?

I believe you have to select a barline for the documentation section you quoted to work. If you select a measure (or notes in a measure) Dorico, I think, assumes you want that section repeated and kindly adds in the start and ending repeats whether you put a start or end repeat in the popover.

I had a pretty thorough look at this. I could not get it to produce the result shown in your second picture. I tried it with selecting the first note, with selecting the time signature, using alt-Enter instead of just Enter, plus many variations on what was entered into the barlines popover.

The only way that I could get a start repeat at the very start and an end repeat half-way through the fourth beat was to untie all the notes, select the first two chords, then enter |: in the barlines popover. With those notes tied, though, it always behaved as it should.

Is it possible to post a cut-down version of the project?

Also, does it happen in every project or just that one? If it happens in every project, there might be something in your settings which is affecting things.

Are you looking at the latest version of the manual?

If you want to add repeat barlines at the start/end of a region simultaneously, select items that span the required duration.

When you add start repeat barlines with a range of items selected, end repeat barlines are also added at the end of the selection.

I think because you selected both notes in the chord, that’s triggering the multi-selection-with-duration behaviour that automatically adds the closing end repeat barline at the end of the selection. Selecting a single note won’t result in this.

That’s what I was doing when I was trying to replicate the OP’s result. But the result for me was only getting the start repeat.

What happens if you put the tied chord in any other bar than the first bar?

I get the same result as the OP. The reason I tried it only in the first bar is that the original example given has 1 as the bar number. I assumed that the time signature had been hidden.

OK. A new day and a successful result! I tried this solution (by Lillie_Harris)—selecting just one note of the 2-note entry—and got what I wanted. I haven’t tried all the other suggestions (ars frusrari-vita brevis) but do appreciate all the help!
