Steinberg Activation Manager won't run after installing Dorico 5

When trying to launch Dorico 5, I get the message, ‘To activate Dorico, switch to Steinberg Activation Manager and follow the prompts. If Steinberg Activation Manager is not running, click Relaunch. If you cannot activate Dorico now, click Quit.’

Steinberg Activation Manager and Steinberg License Engine are both running in Task Manager, but no windows are visible. If I stop them both and try to launch Steinberg Activation Manager directly, they both reappear in Task Manager, but no windows are visible. There are two logs in the Logs folder, but both are empty.

Worth noting that I was able to install and launch Dorico 5 on my MacBook with no issues.

Can you zip up the following two directories and either attach them to this thread or send them to me at r dot lanyon at steinberg dot de:

  • %appdata%\Steinberg\Activation Manager
  • %programfiles%\Steinberg\Activation Manager

That second one in particular may be quite large—feel free to send me a Google Drive or OneDrive link.

For anyone else following this thread, it looks like it is possible for some out-of-date files to get left lying around when upgrading SAM on Windows (and only on Windows). We’ll investigate further, but for anyone else having the same issue the fix is to do the following:

  • uninstall SAM
  • delete any files left lying around in %programfiles%\Steinberg\Activation Manager
  • reinstall SAM
