Steinberg ASIO drivers

What is the difference between the Steinberg built in ASIO driver and the Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO driver?

Yamaha Steinberg is a decent stable driver with fair performance that works with Steinberg and Yamaha hardware only.
Built in is a generic driver with poor performance (high latency) and is best avoided if you have other options.

Steinberg built-in ASIO driver is for hardware that doesn’t have its own ASIO driver.
Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO driver is for Steinberg (Yamaha) USB audio interfaces.

I recently opened Cubase 14 and noticed my Stereo IN channel was pinning in the red. When I investigated further I found that somehow Cubase had switched to the Steinberg Built In Asio driver, and I couldn’t seem to get rid of it . . . especially since I use a Steinberg UR22mkII USB device, which is always plugged in.

I had to uninstall the Built in ASIO driver, then I was offered a choice on opening Cubase where I could select the Yamaha Steinberg UR22mkII USB Audio I’ve been using.

Only things I have done on my system recently is install WaveLab 12, and update Cubase 14 to the most recent version. I also recall previously uninstalling the Built in Asio because it causes issues with my other DAW . . . but it came back onto my system somehow . . . personally, I just want the Steinberg Built In ASIO driver to go away, and never come back.

Usually you can switch drivers by going to Studio → Studio Setup → Audio System.
