Steinberg asks for 100 euros for each update

Quite right. I was a die-hard Apple fanatic and Emagic/>Logic user for a long time. I grew tired of Apple’s price gouging and early hardware obsolescence.

When I realized Windows 11 finally reached a near OSX-like user experience, I bailed out fast and haven’t looked back. In fact, my 2012 MacBook Pro backup machine cannot run current Steinberg or NI software under the newest MacOS today but it sure runs them great in its Windows 11 partition.

Wow! Lots of nice comments to read here.

I think the guy who started this post doesn’t like Steinberg and Cubase, and he’s completely out of touch with reality. He’s the kind of person who wants everything for free. “I want the latest Mercedes, please, but for free”.

Why does he insist on using Cubase if the upgrade formula doesn’t suit him?

There are these misunderstandings sometimes…

Haha, it never occured to me to look at it that way. True, though!

No it probably isn’t.

Windows Pro licenses in the US are 200 USD, list price. The cheap ones under 100 are OEM not intended for private use. There are restrictions on those licenses.

If you paid 100 per year for 25 years and you only now figured out it was too much then this really is your own problem. If it took that long for you to have had enough.

Is it fair? Yes. And it isn’t yearly, it’s per upgrade, which does not happen every year.

The only lack of respect I see is coming from you. Although the all-caps sure is convincing.

Actually, something tells me that you have actually not been buying Cubase for 25 years straight, because assuming you were at least 18 years old when you started you would be at least 43 by now and you don’t really sound like someone in their 40’s.

I was the same when I was younger, just ask some of the older mods. But don’t worry, testosterone drops with age and you’ll chill out.

If the update has $100 worth of stuff in it, I don’t mind. Cubase 14 Pro was worth $100. Cubase 13 was awful and I regretted making that purchase, 12 was pretty good and 11… maybe just avoid the odd numbers?

Audio editing technology honestly moves pretty slow because there really isn’t a whole lot to innovate. Most of the changes are convenience features to speed up processes or make them easier. There’s no reason you can’t produce quality music or soundtracks in Cubase 8 still. People were doing it with tape machines and analog gear before digital music.

Update Cubase the way you would update your computer hardware. You do not need to buy a new Processor and Video Card every single time a new one comes out, the improvements are usually marginal. Update Cubase when they’ve added something worth your time and money, not just because they rolled out a new version.

Not for me … I got Nugenix Total-T!

I personally think Steinberg should have payed us to update. By my reckoning they owe me a good few bucks for updating Dorico, Wavelab and Cubase.
Wish I’d done it every year and they’d owe me even more!

Your brain is made from SMD like the actual Neve’s :sweat_smile:

If you are a Pro, you can probably deduct it from taxes as an expense. If you are hobbyist on low budget, you have some decent cheaper alternatives.

I repeat…why other Daw alternatives comes with free updates and here is now possible?is too much 100 euros just for an update…doesnt justify …Logic sounds fantastic, and has some features far superior compared to cubase…One of them is tempo detection…which in cubase is a disaster…only with drum beats can be accurate…On logic you sing without click and it recognise instantly all tempo changes and variations - and instantly can be adapted to a fixed tempo …and sound quality is at least the same with cubase if not better…You say that if i am a pro i can deduct the price …but Steinberg, like a professional company…cant deduct the price from sales?they sell full versions of software…they are covered…why they are asking that much just to update from one version to other?

Which DAW has free updates forever, list the names and do not say Logic.

Selling to new customers never ever covers developer payments, that is far from reality.

You do get free updates for Cubase several times per year within a release, including new features. Major release updates cost a update fee.

That is how the complete commercial software world works, not just Steinberg.

  1. All DAWs sound the same!! The raw sound without any devices applied nulls between them.
  2. It was already explained, but … Apple pays developers partially from HW sales as Logic works only on Apple and MacOS.
  3. Ableton is at similar price as Cubase and you have to pay for upgrades. Studio One lowered the initial perpetual license price, but they want you to commit to their annual subscription which is way over 100 Euro. Bitwig is annual subscription only and again more then 100 Euro…
  4. I wrote, that if you are Pro, you can probably deduct the upgrade price from your taxes(depends on the laws in your country), so you will pay lower taxes.

If you like Logic so much and you find it sooo superior compared to Cubase, why do you even complain here?

Wow, harsh statement there…

Well, for starters, you don’t HAVE to buy every update, you know… I started from 6 , went to 9 then 11 and now I am on 13…and I bought most of them on sale, I hardly spent the 2000 euros you mentioned.

Be patient, wait for sales, and to be honest, good for them, they are developers. In addition, they have thrown everything on Cubase but their keys to their house, come on now…

If you feel Logic will do it for ya, by all means, but as mentioned, Apple is a different beast.

All the best.

Finally a realistic comment!Thank you!

And there customer service3 really sucks !!! It’s apalling , A month to get a reply !!Unlike Spectrasonics max 3 or 4 days and they will phone you no matter what part of the world you live in !!

I would not have chosen those exact words but yes - there is a lot of room for improvement!
However, may I add that not all is lost: the telephone support works quite well in some countries (yes, this is of little consolation for people who are not within its reach) AND you can always ask for help in this forum (which is also sporadically monitored by Steinberg staff). So there is help unless you see this forum as a mere trash can for rants. In that case - your loss.

I know the point updates are free but I thought you had to pay for major updates, like from 9 to 10.
As well as paying for a new machine to run it. [googly runs for cover]

(Lol. I mangled the quote and replied to the wrong person. This is in reply to @Googly_Smythe )

You know, you joke, but you’re really not that far off. While the Logic Pro 11 bits are indeed free from previous Logic Pro X purchases, you have to have Apple Silicon-based systems to take advantage of all the new features and even plug-ins. And it’s still just Logic Pro in the end. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful DAW for the money and for what it does, but it’s certainly not Cubase. That said, it does allow for distinct input and output devices, which Cubase may get to at some point (and does if you just virtualize your components, but I digress).

The entire thread here is a bit ridiculous, and most have pointed that out, and I’ve tried staying out of it, but your post was too good to ignore

Hi, Thor!Cubase isnt a perfect daw for mac…Alot of errors crashes over the time…I mantain my position that updates for full versions(pro) must be alot more affordable if not free.In 3 updates you pay almost the full price again and again….isnt ok

If only it was like is the past once every 5 years!
That’s why hardware is a better invest for value now,
Especially if you’re using only midi, vmixer…
I was just paying for few bug correction, and a lot of new issues!
Until i realised than no more midi feature will be, i could pray for along until they review the devices panel maker/features, I don’t like the newer version >7, plus i never seen any new feature which was worthing all the potential new issues, so i stopped paying for nothing!
But i was still so stupid that i paid up to 13, because of elicencer support (this big poopies licencing mode, the dongle was way better)!
That’s good that i’m now switching back to hardware, and use less and less computer hardware/software, because unfortunately it’s not only steinberg…
REVOX B77 MKII >40 years of only one invest…
Roland M-480 >20 years of one invest
YAMAHA TX81Z >40 years…
etc…
I’m even wondering if i’m not going to buy cubase 3.0 on atari, midi timing are so much better, at least it should be free now and free from update!
