Steinberg Download Assistant "failed to create/launch jvm"

Hello, this is an issue I’ve been wrestling with for a few weeks now, I finally gave up and decided to post my issue here on the forum…

I haven’t used Cubase 11 for a while, can’t say exactly how much time. About a month ago I wanted to get back into working with it, but when I launched the program it became obvious that all my library files were gone. Thankfully my projects are backed up.

I then tried to open SDA, but as soon as I tried launching it, two messages popped up:

  • “failed to create jvm”
  • “failed to launch jvm”

I’ve tried every suggested solution I saw on the forums, official sites etc:

  • Reinstalling SDA and JAVA
  • Tried to run an older version of SDA
  • Checking the default download folder on Windows Explorer
  • Running the app using the .jar file from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\Download Assistant\app

I’m running the latest versions of Windows 10 and Java.
I have a Ryzen based system:

Ryzen 5 3600X
Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti
16gb ddr4 ram
250 gb m.2 ssd

I have the log file here:

Thank you everyone who tries to help, it’s getting frustrating over here

Welcome to the forum.

From your log it seems the SDA has a problem with the update it did on itself. Try to uninstall the SDA completely (not the rest of your apps) and install it again. Also you might have a look at this website

There is an alternative download in the Solution chapter that might help you in getting this to run.

Thank you Juergen, for the quick response.

I went over the steps in the article you added, unfortunately they didn’t seem to help. The issue persists…

However, I did find additional logs (removed some links that appeared there to be able to post+:

So… I did a deeper dive into my java settings, apparently it was set to use more ram than it was supposed to.

Changed java settings from -Xmx5G to -Xmx2G.

Now when I run the .exe, it DOESN’T show the error, but the application still doesn’t launch, using the .jar is no help either, I can’t get past that sign in page

  • EDIT
    I FIXED IT!
I set the settings back to default, to -Xmx512M, and SDA FINALLY LAUNCHED
Exact steps to replicate the solution (win10):
  • Search for “Environment Variables” in the start menu search
  • locate _JAVA_SETTINGS
  • edit that setting to -Xmx512
  • restart the computer
  • launch SDA

Hi

As I have the same problem as you had (immediate crash when launching with the messages “Error invoking method” followed by “Failed to launch JVM”), I have first tried all the steps described on this page :

I made a ticket to support they just replied to me a month later telling me :

“Is the Steinberg Download Assistant’s problem still pending, please?
As alternative, you can download the Steinberg’s software at this link
https://o.steinberg.net/en/support/downloads.html” (So absolutely no answer to the problem at hand)

I could install Halion Sonic but it seems really necessary to have the Download Assistant program running to get the X-Stream VST running : I have also installed Activation Manager, from which I could active X-Stream, Library Manager that tells “No Libraries Found” and Media Bay, which doesn’t really appear as software on my computer, or maybe a new shortcut for Activation Manager.

So even though I could install Halion Sonic and these other software, it seems that it is still necessary for me to download X-Stream via the Download Assistant, which I can’t get to work.

I tried to follow your method but I don’t think I am as good at informatics as you are…

First I just installed Java for Windows on their website (https://www.java.com/download/ie_manual.jsp)

as it seemed it was not previously installed on my Windows 10 pc

Also, it was proposed on java’s website to install an uninstall program that checks if there are no elements of previous versions of java installed (JavaUninstalTool), which I did and this program just tells me I have only the latest version of Java, 8 Update 441 installed

Then I created a system environment variable as described in this video :

I didn’t even have the “javac” application as described on the Youtube video and therefore the final test described in the video to check if javac is working failed, I just pasted the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_441\bin as a new system environment variable in system variables “Path” / edit / new as described in the video

As I searched as how to get “javac”, I installed JDK23 from Oracle’s website. Now the cmd test as described in the video shows me that javac has been successfully set up on my computer

Yet I still get the same immediate crash when launching the Download Assistant with the messages “Error invoking method” followed by “Failed to launch JVM”

I just noticed that since I installed the JDK23 a new entry has been added to system variables “Path”

(C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath) but I don’t really get what to do from here…

With this level of knowledge, I don’t really understand how you “locate _JAVA_SETTINGS” and change the Java settings in the Variable environments menu (the “Xmx5G”, “Xmx2G” and default “-Xmx512M” settings you mentioned)

Could you please tell me how to proceed ?

To be honest I am shocked that this issue seems not to have been resolved for years and to have to get to such a level of complexity to get a VST (not!) running, trying to find solutions between users instead of Steinberg fixing this…

This is my introduction to Steinberg with a free product, quite not impressed to say the least…
