I purchased the Doric Pro crossgrade from Finale a few weeks ago and I’ve been unable to get this crappy Steinberg Download Assistant to work. It just opens up a web page an is supposed to open Steinberg Web Launcher but it just hangs an never opens. I’ve sent 2 or 3 support requests to Steinberg/Yamaha but have still not gotten a suggestion for how to make it work.
Welcome to the forum @tony.byrne.
Just to check: is it hanging when you try to open the SDA, or when you want to download something inside?
You could try reinstalling the SDA manually:
And then make sure to restart your machine before you try again.
Have you tried a different browser? I assume that you are on Mac. I use Firefox for 99% of my browser usage and have had no problems with the Steinberg pages. I would not touch Chrome for love or money (or chocolate) - too many vulnerabilities.
Or one could try to bypass the SDA and download the Dorico installer directly from this page.
By the way, @tony.byrne, you don’t happen to use a proxy server, because that is something the SDA can’t cope with.
Hi Daniel. Thanks for the response. Yes it just hangs when the SDA opens a Safari page. I’ve attached a screen shot.
Ok, I tried this approach and I got everything installed: Steinberg Activation Manager, Steinberg Library Manager, and Media Bay. Then I was able to install Dorico 5.1.51. But then when I launch Dorico it launches Steinberg Activation Manager which tells me there is no license found. I have a Download Access Code which I got from MakeMusic. But I don’t see anywhere to enter that code. So I’m still kind of stuck in this ridiculous loop. I appreciate the help but am not yet able to move forward. Best Regards, Tony
Hi Steven. Yeah I’ve tried Chrome (I know I’m not crazy about it either). I haven’t used Firefox in years, but I could give it a try or maybe DuckDuckGo. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi Ulf. Yes I tried this approach (see previous reply to DanielMuzMurray). No I’m not using a proxy server. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.
Thanks to all for the help. I’ve about had it for this evening so will give it another go tomorrow. Best Regards, Tony
In the Activation Manager, click on the little icon in the top right (like a head and shoulders), and then click on “My Steinberg”. That will take you to your account’s website, where I think you should be able to enter the code. (The other option in in the SDA itself…)
Safari 17.6 is Sonoma, which should work fine. Do you have any extensions that might be blocking traffic?
Hi @tony.byrne , benwiggy is right, you can go to your My Steinberg account and there enter the Download Access Code. After that you open the Steinberg Activation Manager where you activate the actual Dorico license and then you are done.
Ok thanks. This finally worked.
I finally got Dorico running but it is missing some of the audio content for Halion. It seems current macOS versions don’t support .iso files. I’ve dealt with these before but I think I have to run an older OS version in a VM. I’ll let you all know when I get this resolved. Thanks again.
None of the Steinberg downloads are .iso files. Try reinstalling the missing content from Steinberg Download Assistant.
At worst, there are sometimes permissions issues about the …vstsound files being written to folders inside /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Content/
@benwiggy , actually you can download the Dorico contents also via our Support website under this page, but indeed there they are all iso files.
@tony.byrne , are there no 3rd party utility programs that could mount iso images on a Mac?
This page has some info on dealing with ISOs on Mac.
That’s a really bizarre choice for Mac-specific files, given that Dorico, and HALion and Groove Agent players come as .dmg disk images.
That page is not up-to-date, and a lot can depend on the type of ISO. (iso is just a container for file systems.)
However, I’ve just tested downloading the Iconica Sketch iso, and I can mount that by double-clicking in Sonoma and Sequoia, so there should be no problem.
Yes, I’ve seen some but am trying to avoid installing yet more software for 1 specific problem. I might just see if I can use terminal commands.
I’m able to mount Iconica_Sketch.iso and Groove_Agent_SE_5_Content_incl_Jazz_Essentials.iso by double clicking (I think I tried right-clicking first which didn’t work). But Dorico_Pro_4_5_Content.iso will not mount by either approach. This all just seems overly complicated just to install some notation software. Manufacturers should just stick to notation and let users decide what VIs they want to use for playback. (Sorry for the rant) I’ll just continue to puzzle this out when I have a few hours to devote to it. Thanks again.
