Steinberg Download Assistant huge file!

My app uninstaller shows that the folder size of the Steinberg Download Assistant in Applications is almost 23 GB! However, when I check that folder, I only see two files with a total size of about 250 MB. I looked at the contextual menu for those items and didn’t find any large files.

I also checked the Application Support folder in the Library, and it only has a small Steinberg folder that takes up a few MB.

Does anyone know why this folder is so large and if that’s normal? Can I just delete it?

Thank you!

As macOS doesn’t have uninstaller, I guess you are using a third party app? If true, I would advise against using those kinds of tools…

What is your goal here?

Are trying to completely remove everything that was installed with Dorico or you just want to remove the download assistant and manage the installations and updates yourself in future? If you simply want to remove the download assistant, it comes with its own uninstaller which is inside that same folder we are talking about. But again, I wouldn’t do that unless I want to remove everything Steinberg from the computer.

Clearly this app is giving you an incorrect reading.

The entire Dorico installation (including the sample libraries of Iconica Sketch, HSO, HALion Sonic, Groove Agent) will be about 23 Gb, which may explain where that’s coming from.

You can use the Steinberg Library Manager to move the samples to an external disk, if you’re desperately short of space on your system disk. (Usually 10% free, at least.)

Perhaps it is counting the files in the Downloads > Steinberg > OS X Installers folder? That would make sense to me.

I just thought if it’s an installer and I already have my Dorico installed then maybe I can remove it since such a big file size. I saw some other post where the user reported 67 GB installer installer file!
That’s why my question was if I can delete this file of is it necessarily to keep it.

Thank you.

I got nothing in the Download folder.

Actually, this is a very good paid Mac app and it gives a correct readings.
From this screenshot you can see that it looks like it includes the Steinberg folder in the /Library/Application Support folder. Does the size correct to you?

The Steinberg sound library files consume about 23Gb

Ok, thank you! So, that means I will just leave all the folders where they are without deleting anything?

I’ve not looked in detail, but I think the majority of this is Groove Agent. If you don’t need that you could delete it.

Sorry, what’s Groove Agent?

Yes.

The Groove Agent folder is only 3Gb on my disk. (Though the installer is 6Gb, oddly.) The Iconica Sketch, Olympus Choir, HSO and HALion Sonic samples are much larger.

“Cleaner” apps can delete the wrong thing and leave stuff that ought to be deleted, just as easily as you can!

No, with this Application Uninstaller I can also chose which individual files to be removed or not to remove. You can see in the screenshot above.
This is MacCleaner Pro suite.

While I’ve fallen into the same trap many times in my early days as a Mac user (coming from Windows where those apps are, instead, quite useful), I have learned on my skin not to use cleaner apps in macOS because:

  1. They are not needed, macOS is perfectly capable of cleaning itself
  2. Removing library folders requires care and should not be done lightly

The old say stays: if you don’t know what it does, don’t touch it!
