Yes, as said earlier, later is the correct way. Tape machines can only be master.
And then you will need to connect your master keyboard to the synchronizer to be able to play MIDI synths.

I still have a Mirage rack for the sound. Replaced the floppy drive with a virtual floppy drive that takes an SD card.
ahh the Mirage - that takes me back…even older than the s950 - 8bit and very very crunchy
and yes I’ve put a floppy emulator in the s950 - takes usb sticks too I think ? haven’t looked at it for a while
Thanks Takashi
Its all so mind blowingly complicated
I am a musician, without wishing to be arrogant, guitar and piano comes easy and natural to me, but all this tech is so difficult, perhaps it comes easy to you or you have worked hard.
Anyway I have seen a Helicon Prism rack mount vocal processor/harmonizer unit second hand for £100. I was thinking about adding to my racks, what do you think? I have a Helicon pedal for live vocal work and it is very good.
Thanks mate
I remembered that there are other interesting legacy devices called Yamaha CBX-D3 and D5 (took me some time to remember the name ). With these, you can run Cubase Audio for Atari ST. I had never tried it myself though, you can record/playback 4 or 8 tracks of audio fully controlled from Cubase tracks/parts, just like the modern approach.
Yes Takashi
I have my 2 portable 8 mount racks with
Roland JV1000 synth module (2u)
Alesis Midiverb 4 (1u)
Stereo Graphic (1u)
Stereo Compressor/expander (1u)
Neutric stereo patch bay (1u)
XRI 300 MTC (1u)
Dod 3 way stereo active X-over (1u) - absolutely no use for home recording, I just got it when a previous band split up .
2nd rack
Alesis original ADAT (3 unit) x2 so 6 units
Phillips 733 DCC (2 units)
I have just bought a dolly trolly little platform with castors to put these on as my back has really gone now.
I also have a metal Samson 12 unit rack which is also on castors. It is completely empty and I am looking to fill it in time
As primarily a guitar player the one piece of kit I would really like to add to the rack is the Marshall JMP1. It is a valve guitar rack mount preamp with MIDI and is mmmmm:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
if you have the BRC I don’t think you need the XRI 300 - as the BRC puts out MTC (I think - it’s been a long time)
I used to use the 9001 which is the predecessor to the JMP1 although not nearly as widely regarded. I quite liked it but I wouldn’t buy another one today. I’m a huge marshall fan however and have a LOT of vintage heads/combos.
Yes, that’s right. BRC outputs MTC. And it was one of the first machine that implemented MMC. If you set up correctly, you can Start/Stop/Locate on Atari Cubase.
A/D D/A of the original ADAT is very good, you can use them as the converters for your DAW as well.
BRC ? Dont know what that is but I will hazard a guess Doc… Binary reading code? Which I think would equate to the same thing as SMPTE MTC ?
Yeah the ADATs have that I believe. But it is just a case of getting all of the stuff working in sync, when you are using old tech and heavy old gear both analogue and digital…IMVHO.
Also, I am still thinking about going for an Akai S2000. My budget for each piece of rackmount is below £100. Takashi advised me of the limitations of this machine and that is appreciated, but… it would satisfy my means… just an old bloke building my home studio again.
Logic dictates I should bin the Atari and the hard outboard gear and ADATS and DCC and the analogue multitracker, get a life and just use a decent DAW… better in every way and less hassle. But I am not very logical, that is why I bought a 2nd hand Jaguar XKR instead of a much better second hand Porsche 911.
Alesis BRC = big remote control. You could sync mulitple adats and it outputs MTC
or a mini metro
I never got given a BRC with either ADATs when I bought, I have seen them yes
And a Mini Metro was a really rubbish badly built cheap little car in England in the 80’s. So I dont want one of those either
Ye dissin ma Jag bro !!???
Simple acronymn that sounds more complicated. BRC well there ya go
Bit like the Mitsubishi Evo 400 FQ car.
FQ?? Err … Formula Quantising?
Nah it just stood for F… Fairly Quick
There is the basic remote control with a plug in lead for £49 on ebay which I dont need. Then there is the larger unit to sync ADAT’s which also looks like some sort of digital PC interface including all the bells and whistles for £200 upwards second hand which would be the BRC you may have been referring to. Cant justify that on my current budget but will look into it in future. Looks interesting.
Thanks Doc
reverb price guide suggest they sell for much less than £200
Yeah thats the one. Will it be an interface for DAW as well? Providing phantom power and interface for my 2 Rode Condenser mikes to DAW etc? Flying by the seat of my pants here and really havent much of a clue If it has some PC interface facility then def worth considering
Thanks Doc
Right … next question
These are not available on the Reverb site at the mo.
Can I use my XRI XR300 MTC to sync my 2 ADATs ?
Thanks
Hi Takashi
I am not trying to disrespect your knowledge in any way Takashi, you operate on a much higher level of tech and knowledge than I can ever do. I am a mere simple musician. I am trying to build a little home studio on a very limited budget with each rack mount unit for under £100. I know nothing about sampling and have never owned one and never could be bothered to learn at college 30 years ago. So a budget entry level S2000 to get me into it for about £80 will do me fine to get started.
Thanks
Steve
I have made an offer on an S2000 of £80. Includes a Gotec Emulator. I have absolutely no idea what that is, I have no knowledge of samplers whatsoever, but for 80 quid and if it works and fits into the rack I dont care. It will get me started to learn sampling
