Stop Cubase from deleting autosaves when it crashes

This shouldn’t really need to be said but I’ve lost creative sessions I can’t easily replicate because my backups all got deleted when it crashed.

Thank you for this. Yes, it wasn’t just new and unnamed projects but also established ones. I think if I have to remind myself to create additional ‘save as…’ projects then it defeats the purpose of a backup system. They’re supposed to just do their job in the background. Explaining that the backup system gets frozen if the project is actively running just explains why it is faulty, not why they haven’t fixed it over consecutive updates. Having multiple versions of the same project also gets messy quickly.

My guess is that it’s about legacy code behaviour, but does that mean they will never fix it? From an average user perspective, it is a serious issue. I’ve spent a lot more money now to get a stable and powerful system, and so nothing crashes any more. So this problem will be experienced by newer users who are less able to understand it and deal with it. I don’t know if any other modern software that requires user intervention to get the auto-save faculty to do its job.

I have never experienced such a behaviour. Maybe check on your auto save settings?
Of course, if Cubase does an auto save in the background this will temporarily consume resources. It has nothing to do with old code.

If there’s a real issue then you would need to provide more detailed information than that.

You’re saying .bak files were there before the crash, but disappeared after the crash? I can’t say I’ve ever seen that. It’s hard to understand how a crashed app would be capable of doing anything, let alone delete files.

I looked into it and gathered that cubase sometimes deletes backups when it crashes but I don’t know if that is true. Autosave was set up, and it was working because I could see backup files. All I know is that when I needed a backup there wasn’t one for no obvious reason.

I see. Sorry, I haven’t experienced the problem of no backup files. I don’t know where you read that Cubase “sometimes deletes backups when it crashes”, but I don’t believe that’s true.
