Sometimes I’ve found that when I enter a note Dorico turns it into two notes. And this occurs even when I’m initially writing a score (as opposed to later making changes/corrections). If I enter a dotted 1/4 note, Dorico puts a 1/4 note and an 1/8th note on the staff. If I enter a half note Dorico puts two 1/4 notes. (See image example) This may not occur all of the time, but how can I force Dorico to believe that I want what I selected?
Type O or click the G clamp in the left panel to turn on Force Duration. There’s also a Preference (on the Dorico menu on Mac or the Edit menu on Windows) to keep it turned on constantly (though you do still need to turn it on once at the beginning of each editing session).
That said, a) investigate Library > Notation Options > Note Grouping and see if you could set better defaults for what you want to see and b) do try continuing to input rather than trying to fix each case in the moment: within the Notation Options there are different rules dependent on whether a note is followed by another note or by a rest, so (just like with enharmonic spelling) Dorico can often change its mind after you’ve added the next note.
Thank you. The O solved the problem on an individual basis and I will check setting notation options.
