Strange behavior in importing MusicXML file converted from Finale with drum kit

I made what I think is a very simple file in Finale using (only) a drum kit. If I print this example from Finale, the staff looks like this:

If I now convert this file to MusicXML and import it into Dorico, I get this:

I’m sure there’s a rational explanation for these apparently spurious rests, but having just gotten started with Dorico, I’m not quite sure how to go about looking for it.

Suggestions?

Have a look in Preferences > MusicXML import. Among the various settings, there is one for Rest visibility.

What you’re seeing here is a result of how the voices are set up in the drum set percussion kit in Dorico. If you go to Setup mode, expand the card for the player holding the drum set instrument, then click the little icon next to the kit nane, and choose Edit Percussion Kit, you’ll be in the right place to make changes.

Select each instrument in the Five-line staff tab and look at the settings in the action bar below the grid of instruments: you can see which stem direction and voice number each instrument is assigned to. You can make changes there and when you click Apply you’ll see everything update.

There are also options on the Percussion page of Notation Options that affect voicing and rests, so you will want to explore them too.

Dorico’s drum kit notation is very powerful and configurable, so take some time to start to understand the concepts.

Ah…It looks like the problem is that the kick and snare have their stems pointing in different directions by default, even though they’re part of the same voice. So Dorico is trying to render two separate voices in the same staff, and is giving each one rests when it’s not playing.

In Dorico, upstem voice 1 and downstem voice 1 are two separate voices.

Thank you for this thread and @StevenJones01 | @dspreadbury for answers. I am trying really hard to find answers myself and not to come here with everything because now this forum is so overloaded with newbie questions because people jump ship and need to produce results fast. I like Dorico more every day.
