Strange font appearance in Dorico 5.1

Hi everyone, after updating to Dorico 5.1, I noticed a strange issue. Basically, it’s like everything on screen appears “bold”. Notes, lines, characters, music symbols… and it doesn’t depend on the zoom level. I’m 100% sure this didn’t happen with Dorico 5, even if unfortunately I cannot test it as after the update I cannot revert back to the previous version.
If I export the score to PDF the issue seems to go away, and the result is as expected.
Here’s a couple of screenshots, of the preview in the “write” window and the corresponding PDF (same zoom level).

Anyone experiencing the same issue?

Thanks

Leonardo

I can assure you that there have been no differences in the way Dorico renders the music between Dorico 5.0.20 and Dorico 5.1. Whatever is going on will be due to some configuration change on your system. Have you installed any new software or utilities recently? Have you updated your graphics hardware or drivers?

Hi Daniel, thanks for your reply !
No I didn’t change anything, hardware or software. I was literally working with 5.02 this morning, and I updated to 5.1 in the early afternoon. The only software I updated was the Steinberg Download Manager (which updated the library manager as well). Anyway, I found what causes Dorico to render the music this way: it’s the setting “use font smoothing when available” in OS X. I noticed that Dorico picks up the setting at startup. In fact, if I uncheck the setting and launch Dorico, everything renders fine, even if I re-activate the font smoothing later. Closing a project and reopening doesn’t cause any issue. Only if I restart Dorico I then get the same odd visualisation.

Is there a way to configure Dorico to ignore or override that setting ?

No, there’s no way to influence Dorico in this regard.

What version of macOS are you using? That option isn’t in the latest version (Sonoma 14), and font smoothing parameters have been gradually deprecated and withdrawn for some time.

It is possible to configure font smoothing just for a given app, using the defaults write command, but I’d normally advise against using it. What physical size and resolution is your display?
