Strange non-splitting at the half-bar

I can’t work out why when I delete this note in red, the note in blue changes its appearance by no longer splitting at the half-bar.

I would have expected (and much prefer) something like this (which I’ve constructed in MS Paint).

I’ll attach my Note Group settings in case anyone can spot anything. You may see that I generally prefer note splitting at the half-bar (with the exception of minums and dotted minimums).

Thank you.

I believe the option that’s controlling this specific spelling of the dotted crotchet is “Notes starting on a beat followed by a rest in the middle of the beat”, in the Simple Time Signatures With or Without a Half-bar section.

Remember of course that you can always use Force Duration to overrule your Notation Options, rather than going into MS Paint

Thank you, @Lillie_Harris. You’re absolutely right. Changing Notes starting on a beat followed by a rest in the middle of the beat to

has provided the desired result.

I think, in my mind, I expected that rule to be overruled by the first rule, Notes starting on a beat ending in the middle of the beat), to prevent non-splitting at the mid-bar.

image

Maybe I still think that should be the case, but I can live with this compromise.

And I’ll have no disrespecting of MS Paint thank you very much. I use it every single day!

It should. This is simply wrong according to every single modern notation guide or publisher house style:

Dorico clearly should prioritize splitting at the half-bar here, rather than favoring something that is never going to be correct.

Yes, and I originally thought that the first rule

would sort that out.

On deeper reflection, I’m not sure if I like the Notes starting on a beat followed by a rest in the middle of the beat rule. Choosing this option to fix my problem above

has the side effect of inconsistent dotted crotchets, depending on the contents of the following object.

I know that I can use Force Duration, but I really like Dorico’s philosophy regarding these automatic defaults and don’t feel that my example is obscure enough to need a manual override.

In my opinion, if the Notes starting on a beat ending in the middle of the beat rule could override the Notes starting on a beat followed by a rest in the middle of the beat rule, then I think that would be much better as I could keep my dotted crotchets.
