String Fingering - Request for "Dash" options

I’m just familiarizing myself with fingering features for orchestral strings. My requests are specifically about the shifting indicator (“dash”) marker. If the features below are already available, I’d appreciate being pointed in the right direction! Otherwise, I’d love to see:

(a) the option to have the dash reference the finger number after the shift, rather than the pre-shift number: “Indicate shift from previous note.” This will help with spacing, as I tend to mark my dashes just in front of the “arrival” finger number that results from a shift. Sometimes I throw the dash about equally between the two numbers, but that’s rare in what I’m used to seeing as a player and teacher.

(b) I use flat dashes (hyphens) more frequently angled. I see where I can change the angle to 0° in Engrave Options, but the result is a symbol that is vertically aligned at the bottom. I’d like to be able to have this hyphen vertically centered as a standard hyphen would be. As it stands, I can only do this by adjusting the Y position value of each symbol, and eyeballing the correct position.

Edited because I am incapable of proofreading before posting!

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum @string_usr !
And welcome to the group of us string players and teachers requesting more (and more flexible) options for string fingerings!

Let’s keep this coming to make it climb the priority ladder!
I have about 200 duets for cellos already input in Sibelius that I’m reluctant to transfer just because of this.

Welcome to the forum, @string_usr, and thanks for your feedback. I can’t make any promises about when we will extend the existing functionality for the appearance of fingering on stringed instruments, but I confirm that we are aware of requests in this area of the program.

Not sure if this would help, but it is possible to add symbols of your own to replace finger numbers in the music symbol editor, for example to replace those not otherwise used for string fingering like 5-9. And then you can change the position of the symbol by use of blank glyphs on various sides of the symbol in the music symbol editor.

Yes, please add this feature! Dorico should allow anything typed in the fingering shift+F box to show as the fingering.
