Since upgrading to v.2.2.10.300 of VST Live 2, I am experiencing random stuck MIDI notes. Using “MIDI monitor” to see what is going on, I see that VST Live is randomly not receiving MIDI off events. I did not have this issue on my previous version of VST Live which was v.2.1.21.236.
The issue occurs in multiple performances/songs, but seems to be related to the Korg Keystage controller I am using. When I used a different controller (by Studiologic), the issue does not occur. However, I do not have an issue when using the Keystage controller with Cubase 14, so I don’t think there is an issue with the controller. The issue seems to be specific to a combination of the latest version of VST Live when used with the Keystage controller.
BTW - deleted v. 2.2.21.334 and reinstalled v.2.1.21.236 - and no more stuck MIDI notes when using the Korg Keystage as the controller. Thus there appears to be an issue with both v.2.2.10.300 and 2.2.21.334
Unfortunately, I get the same results with v. 2.2.21.334. Uninstalling v2.2.21.334 and reinstalling an older version of VST Live (v.2.1.21.236) did resolve the stuck MIDI notes issue (though I am on an older version of VST Live again). For what it is worth, the Korg Keystage is one of the new MIDI 2.0 devices, so I wonder if there is something going on with MIDI 2.0 and the newer MIDI stack in v 2.2 of VST Live.
“Sometimes, the MIDI Note Off message isn’t sent properly, causing the note to remain stuck. This can happen if playing too fast or if there’s a problem with the MIDI connection”
and
" If a note on your Korg Keystage becomes stuck (continues sounding after the key is released), try pressing the Stop button three times quickly."
We do understand that it does not happen with Cubase or older versions of VST Live, but that doesn’t help much. Not your fault, but what can we do?
What exactly happens: the note off is not beeing received by VST Live, or it is not beein sent by VST Live?
But if the MIDI Monitor doesn’t show that MIDI is not beeing received, it is simply not beeing received. And are you sure that it sends Note Off messages, or Note On messages with velocity 0 (which is treated as note off)?
Whatever helps to identify or narrow the probelm, thanks.
I suppose it’s a Mac bug in version 2.2. I got the stuck notes problem after installing 2.2.36 yesterday to my Intel Macbook Pro and had to back to 2.1. to make VST Live usable again. All in all, VST Live has been and still is a very buggy program, especially compared to Cubase.
Please don’t say that without elaborating. Users decide what to use based on forum entries, and we have 30 pages of positve feedback (easy to find in this forum) confirming stability and many successful reports of live shows.
It’s fair to complain, but please don’t do that as a general comment, let us know what doesn’t work for you and we’ll fix it as we always do, thanks.
Ok, sorry. I was just so disappointed when I found out the update is useless in my machine. As for elaboration, all versions of VST Live 1 nearly always crashed on opening a setlist, usually the third attempt was succesful. There have been other annoying but non-fatal bugs but I haven’t made a list of them. My setlists usually have a dozen songs with a couple of audio tracks, a few midi tracks, several VSTi Layers and sometimes a video track. To be fair, I’m running at the edge of my old MBP’s capacity. I’m sure the Windows version is more stable, and the M-Macs may be as well, if there is so much positive feedback. And the feature set of VST Live is great, I wouldn’t need anything more. So I’m really happy if the stuck notes problem gets solved.
We don’t accept crashes at all. Crashes usually create a crash report which helps us a lot to identify bugs, could you check and send those? Thank you!
If you don’t mind, you might also send us a project file (just the .vlprj file, no audio etc needed) so we can have a look what might cause those issues.
And Micha is looking into stuck notes on Mac, we’ll let you know.
The crashes when opening a setlist were on VST Live 1 and the problem went away with version 2 so I don’t think the crash reports would be relevant (and I don’t know where they might be located, either). I can send the project file, but where do I send it to?
You can either PM or send to m.spork@steinberg.de, thanks!
But it would not make sense if it cannot reveal problems. We are looking into stuck notes (Mac only it seems) right now, for that, we would need at least the “midi” folder along with the project. Will ask for it should we need it anymore, thanks for the offer!
I am also having problems with ‘hung-notes’ (missing Midi Note-Offs) using a Keystage 61 with VST Live (Tested on 2.2.51 - 54). This is on a Mac Studio, tested on OS 15.5 & 15.6. This happens to either internal (VSTi) or external (external midi instrument) routings from the controller. Midi probe connected to the controller simply confirms the missing note-offs. The note offs are being swallowed fairly frequently (happening within about 10 seconds of normal piano playing speeds on the Keystage).
I am also seeing occasional swallowing of MIDI Note-Ons. This is not as frequent, but does come up in normal playing.
The keystage is in a rather vanilla mode - I factory reset the unit, and made sure that it was simply using channel AT, and not configured to transmit Midi 2.0. Also, I am not connecting any device to use the audio-over-usb, simply midi events. (I did not see any way to mute the audio driver on the Keystage).
I am pretty certain this is a VST-Live problem, and not a USB connection problem on my side. I have reproduced this problem with multiple USB cables, and routings into the Macs USB. Conversely, I see no missing note events using other software (Studio One, Logic, Direct routing to VSTi).
In the Mac’s Midi Device Setup (AudioMidi), the Keystage shows 2 ports available from USB: Port 1: (KBD/CTRL) and Port 2: (DAW In/Out). Configuring VST Live with Port 1 renders the situation with dropped MIDI notes. Configuring VST Live with Port 2, no MIDI Notes are passed.
I hope you can get to the bottom of this. It is rendering my new Keystage controller rather useless for my purposes.
