When scoring for music theatre, I would find it useful if Dorico allowed me to either suppress playback of certain repeat marks, or (more logically, I guess) set “play n times” to 1. Currently, it can’t be set lower than 2 – which makes sense, except for “Safety” bars that aren’t actually intended to be repeated unless something unexpected happens, such as a singer missing their cue.
You could stop repeats playing altogether by setting the option in Playback options>repeats
That’s nice, but would only help in scores without actual repeats.
Another scenario is in Jazz tunes where you may have a chorus for solos and an indication “optional repeats for more solos”. In this case the mock up should not play the repetition.
The Playback options>repeats setting stops ALL repeats incluging jumps (dal segno al …, etc.) which may not be what you want.
I take it this feature doesn’t exist in Dorico? (as of April 2025)
I need to suppress just one repeat - but the only setting I could find was to suppress ALL repeats.
Also, 2nd tie endings do not playback properly. I’m a bit surprised this functionality doesn’t exist already - given how common a note tie crossing over into the 2nd ending is.
I’ll also add that there should be an easy way to check repeats - like Finale has. In Dorico I’ve been checking repeats by playing the document. Finale has a feature that visually shows how the repeats are working - this is VERY useful.
My workflow often includes exporting MIDI. For Dorico I’ve been editing the MIDI file itself to compensate. I suppose I could create two Dorico files - one for MIDI exports and one for printing - but then I’d be maintaining two separate documents.
All of the above isn’t an issue in Finale. I do miss Finale in these circumstances.
