I am trying out the demo of the Swam Vari Flute. In my DAW it works perfectly, but in Dorico I am unable to open the instrument by clicking the “show instrument“ button in the play tab. I already wrote to the Swam team about this, but so far no solution. Not sure if this could be a problem on the vst side or of Dorico. Any suggestion on how to solve this is welcome
Unfortunately I just shut down my computer. At least all other SWAM Instruments work. If I don’t forget it I can test it tomorrow and tell you if it works
When I need to use an AcousticSamples instrument in Dorico, I actually use a playback template (I’ve created one with all my AS instruments, and one for each of those, just in case…)
They all need to load UVI workstation. But that’s not what you were talking about. You were talking about Vari-Flute, which is a AudioModeling instrument. My SWAM instruments (solo strings) work flawlessly in Dorico, although I don’t think those are a good solution yet (they really are meant to be recorded live with loads of cc controllers, just like a real instrument).
Each SWAM instrument from the solo strings is available in the VST rack under Audiomodeling. Is Vari-flute missing?
To be clear, Audiomodeling is the firm that builds and sells SWAM instruments, AcousticSamples is another firm (and I don’t really know why they came in the conversation, even if I do love their products!)
I reall don’t agree. In fact I think they give the most consitant performance in Dorico with expression maps. This example is only SWAM an expression map with “almost” no tweaking
I have to admit your examples sound really nice! I have not been able to use my solo strings in a convincing way (although I know they are splendid instruments). And for all winds, I’ve invested in Acousticsamples, which sound great with minimal effort (and probably SWAM do as well), so I won’t double the expenses
Just wondering how you layered the string section and solo violins in Dorico (layering is not really planned in the Play mode workflow…)
Thank you. You are right. Unfortunately you can’t send the midi of one staff to multiple VSTi. So I use Vienna Ensemble Pro. You could also use unify (?). For Violin 1 I use 3 small SWAM sections and 2 Solo players. I think all other sections are build with only one solo instrument and two sections.
In more expressive music it sounds great when you mix the solo instruments in a little louder
Hi Marc… It’s because you asked if I had other Audiomodeling instruments; I thought you meant the principle of sound generation instead of the company.
I just installed the Variflute in my PC instead of the labtop, there it works, although with some weird glitches, it sometimes opened Halion instead of variflute when clicking the “edit instrument“ button. This happened a few times on an existing project, but when I created a new project, it worked ok. To me it makes very much sense to use something like variflute inside Dorico, that way I can use my EWI 5000 and do a live recording.
It works exactly as expected. I should probably try it in a context where other instruments are loaded, to check on your e button inconsistency.
[Edit] I tried on a large orchestral file (Moldau) and flute 1 was vari-flute and flute 2 AS VWinds flute, and no problem when I call for the plug-in (I’m using F1 as a shortcut to open the selected instrument plug-in, just as if I went to play mode and press the e button).
I have it suddenly working on my laptop; although I restarted it twice when trying to make it work, suddenly this morning after switching on the laptop; everything worked perfectly . Time to create an expression map. Problem solved.
