Swing feel tempo marking

Does Dorico already have a way to insert a swing feel tempo marking (eight-notes played with triplet feel as in jazz/blues)? I already have the piece set to swing feel playback, but I would like to add the correct notation too.

By the way, the swing feel tag is sometimes on top of notes that then are difficult to get at with the mouse as the tag gets inadvertently selected. Am I doing something wrong?

If you install Metrico, a free font created by our fellow Dorician Florian Kretlow, you perfectly can insert those markings as system text.

Thanks @MarcLarcher. Will try that.

For selecting things behind signposts, you can either hide signposts or Shift-Alt/Opt-click at the position, which cycles through each item at the same position each time you do so.

Is this still the solution, or has it been updated in 5?

This is still the way.

Just want to check here, when exporting as a PDF, does dorico export the fonts too?
That could result in a bulky file if not done efficiently. On the other hand, I’ve had PDF export experiences before where it assumes the recipent has the necessary fonts to render as intended. If opening on a device without the music-fonts installed how does it appear?

the alternative is to create/insert a png or gif graphic that can be inserted (attached)
triplet-feel-ss

PDFs embed everything. I’ve probably shared 20,000 PDFs exported from Dorico and have never had a font rendering problem with anyone.

Don’t use rastered images. Please!

Thank you for the link, and have installed the MusGlyphs font family (Metric seems to be missing from that repository). No, how, precisely do we add these using System Text? I don’t see any option for doing so…

Alt-Shift-X or Opt-Shift-X.

Here a short video showing how to enter that (you can read it in the Documentation.pdf of MusGlyphs):

  • alt(option)+shift+x to enter text (sorry in the video I added it erroneously as staff-attached text, it should be system-attached text)
  • choose MusGlyphs as font
  • ee=qe3

I agree using existing fonts such as Metrico would be the best solution at this point, but still hope if Bravura or other SMuFL fonts have a dedicated symbols for this purpose, if we think about having more options for various tastes. As far as I know Chaconne EX is the only SMuFL font which has it in the list.

You might use Shift+X, to insert a Text then Copy/Paste the text below:
(set the font to Bravura, size: 20 points)

♫   

…you’ll get this:

The brackets are not quite connecting with the tuplet, so writing swing mark with Bravura would result only as shown above.

*P.S: @dspreadbury *

Daniel, can you help us out by embedding the Bravura font in the forum? When we type an ASCII code, we’d love to see the music symbol right away instead of having to paste screenshots. Thanks a bunch!

Another cool trick is to type your swing mark as a second voice, then you make the swing mark notation as a cue notes, see below:

You can then use the Text tool to add the equal sign = and maybe the parentheses ( )

This is indeed an interesting trick, I was able to reproduce it. Thank you very much!
