Swing playback NotePerformer

With swing playback NotePerformer clips the offbeat 8th note shorter than you want, before a rest. Is there a setting in Dorico that would fix this? It did this in Finale too (I’m learning Dorico after 30 years working in Finale…). Attached example was done in Finale; would apply same way in Dorico. Other playback templates seem to work OK so far. NP support indicated the software wasn’t designed for jazz playback (…?), so I’m wondering if Dorico has a solution.

Welcome to the forum — and Dorico, @mikecampbell01!

There is a way to get longer eights from your NP playback. I’ve talked about coaxing swing out of NP in a few other threads, so I just grabbed those posts:

Thanks for the response, man. Will check out the key editor. I make mockups for clients by exporting winds/strings audio from notation into Logic and physically playing the rhythm parts for more convincing groove. NotePerformer seemed a game changer until the first swing chart :man_shrugging:

Yeah, NP is definitely square, and they’re the first to admit it (though not precisely in those terms :smirk:). But I can tell you that a playback-copy flow with all of the slurs and accents you’d never actually include plus audio-only tweaks will get passably decent results.

If you ever want to get into more serious playback, you’d be looking at other VSTis. (That looks weird pluralized.)

Ample Sound’s Upright Bass and Gibson ES 335 (just called Semi-Hollow, if memory serves) are great; Boz Master keys are solid; and Dorico power-user/jazz composer/arranger @FredGUnn has done some great things with other horn libraries:
