The flags in the image below prevent me from clicking on notes. They are unnecessarily big (like the key signature flags), and I would like to minimize them or make them dissappear.
Also what is the best way to create an indication of swing/straight on a per instrument basis, because the straight/swing seems to only be for playback, with no text for the instrumentalist.
I apply the playback signposts, as you did, but also invoke the tempo popover a second time and type things like âSwing (q = 144)â for the (automatically) system-attached tempo indication in the score/parts. (No need to add individual staff-attached text.)
Thanks! Yeah I (transitioning from finale) am finding many defaults annoying. I have been able to change some to my liking but others seem to stick. I have yet to create a system of key commands, but will do as I start working more with dorico.
But when you do this, are you required to add (q=144)? Because in this case there is no tempo change so I donât want to add that part in. When I just write Swing, it applies only to playback.
So then how does one add this to some staves and not to others? I have figured out how to add playback change to some staves, but with this type of âtempoâ indication it automatically jumps to the top of the system, even when I press alt+return
Visible text tempo indications are always system items, I believe.
The rhythmic feel changes (signposts) can be per-player, but your initial selection before adding them has to be of items that only belong to that player, so Dorico knows which player you want to add it to.
For that youâll need to use staff-attached text (or, if you prefer, a playing technique, I suppose). You can tweak the font/point size to match any other tempo indications in the score.
Ok, Iâm almost at the end of my questions, but I am still not satisfied.
Here is what I tried: shift+x for text, but it only goes to top staff of selection, meaning I need to write it (or copy it?) to every staff. Is that a text thing?
Playing technique worked much nicer, because I can apply it to multiple staves at once. However I just spent 5 minutes trying to figure out why my playing techniques I created werenât working. Apparently when I type in the name of a playing technique and press OK, it doesnât save. If I type a name, followed by clicking on another element in the window and then OK, it saves. Is this a known bug?
At this point it might be helpful to see a screenshot of an actual notational result youâre trying to achieve.
But, answering in the abstract: Yes, staff-attached text is exactly that, attached to the staff above (or below, if you F flip it) which itâs created. To show it on more than one staff, with the text selected, opt/alt - click will quickly duplicate it on any other staves you want.
One advantage of creating it as a playing technique, I suppose, is that by setting it to immediate tempo text font in the pop-up, youâre guaranteed consistency.
I'm able to make a ''Swing'' technique and add it to a score without any trouble:
Oh that alt-click is awesome. I guess it is like using a filter on finale, but quicker. Thanks. I have gotten the notation result I wanted using the two techniques you mention. I just was looking for a quick way to write swing/straight on multiple lines, but not on others, as this is a common thing in jazz.
I unfortunately seem to have a bug, or there is something I donât understand. When you edit a new playing technique are you required to manually enter the name, text, and popover text separately, or is it automatic? Here is a guide to my three screenshots:
I open the edit playing technique dialog and create a new technique
I type the name of a (bovine) playing technique
After pressing OK, and trying to enter the playing technique in a score and seeing that it doesnât work, I reopen the playing technique dialog to see that my new playing technique has been saved under ânew playing techniqueâ and lacks a popover text.
After you type the name, donât click OK. Instead, click in the text field and the name you gave it above should auto-populate. Then you can choose your font in the pop-up right next to that field.
