Switching from FL Studio to Cubase: what's worth knowing and how to get started?

Hi, as the title says, what’s worth knowing to get started? I’ve been on FL for a while, but I decided I needed something more, some kind of change, and I wanted to familiarize myself with you and Cubase. Of course, I need help with step-by-step explanations of how to get started, what to do, etc.

Thanks for your help, and hello, my name is Mucek!

Best regards!

Hello and welcome.

Cubase serves a very diverse user base. From young to old, from recording and mixing engineers to producers to composers, from midi only to audio only and anything in between.

Maybe a good way to start is trying to understand the general design philosophy of the software. That is not to only look at what you see but to grasp the meaning behind it. It is quite different from FL Studio in many regards.

Maybe a good starting point is this video:

Generally there are a lot of good videos on the official Cubase YT channel. Some rather specific ones, others more general.

Alright, I’m about to start watching  I’ve already seen a few tutorials, like how to set up the Control Room xD.
Right now, the only thing I’m struggling with is setting up the Native Instruments A49 MIDI keyboard. I want to assign all the knobs and buttons, but honestly, I’m completely lost with it. If you guys have a tutorial or a ready-made configuration file that could help set it up, that would be great — I really want to use this keyboard to its full potential in Cubase.

Another question: is the plugin from Native Instruments a good choice? Or are there better ones out there? I must say, their bundles look really interesting, but I’m also looking for something with a massive collection of sounds — for film music, games, anything really. I’m interested in it all. I have a cool idea for music, so maybe I’ll manage to create something new.

I moved to Cubase from Sonar a few years ago. This forum has been my BEST source of help and info. The new manual is really great and a general internet search helps when all else fails. SOMEONE out there is having the same situation as you and the vast majority of folks are very willing to help and are extremely well-informed. I’ve never had a problem with Steinberg Support when things get really sticky. My go-to is this forum. In addition, Chris Selim and Dom Sigalas on YouTube are excellent resources. Good luck. You will be VERY HAPPY that you made the switch.

I know I might be asking for a lot, but I’m new here — thanks for the quick and (I think) very helpful answer! I’m going to test it right now. I’ll give you a like for the help

I think you could ask for less if you keep this one bookmarked.

Welcome!

Hi Mucek,

I have a Kindle book available on Amazon that is specifically designed to help new Cubase users get up and running and assist those moving from another DAW - “Getting Started with Music Production in Cubase 14” URL - Amazon.com: Getting Started with Music Production in Cubase 14: A Practical Guide for Recording, Sound Design, Mixing and Mastering eBook : Smith, Andrew: Kindle Store

It might help clear up some of the confusion involved in changing DAWs
