Switching Percussion Instrument

Working a Percussion part in a Concert Band piece. The Perc. 3 kit contains Woodblock and Tambourine, I have decided I don’t like the Woodblock sound and want to change it to Claves. In Setup Mode I clicked on Perc. 3 arrow and took the Tambourine part out of the kit, leaving only the Woodblock part (Which shows up as “Perc. 3 Claves,Tambourine” in a green box. The removed Tambourine shows up below that box in a white box. If I select the white box it will allow me to change the instrument (which I don’t want to do). But when I click on the green box above and open the kit which now has Woodblock only in it, It will not let me select “change instrument”. How can I convert the Woodblock sound over to a Clave sound? If I try to drag the Woodblock part out of the kit, all the notes vanish. I want to keep the notes there but just change the instrument from Woodblock to Claves.

If a reduced version of the score would be helpful I can create and sent that

Thanks so much.

Just to avoid confusion, a percussion kit in Dorico is displayed with a green background. The white background indicates an instrument. So in your screenshot, your Perc. 3 players holds a kit called “Percussion 3 Claves, Tambourine” and then a Tambourine as a separate instrument.

The quickest way to change an instrument within a kit, is to click the ... next to the kit name (so within the green box) and choose Edit Percussion Kit.

Then select the instrument (Woodblock in this case), and in the bottom left click Change Instrument. If the Change Instrument button isn’t active, you either have no instrument selected or multiple instruments selected.

If you want to change a single instrument held by a player (so with the white background), click the ... and choose Change Instrument directly. (In both cases the instrument picker appears and you can choose a different instrument).

In both cases the notes will be preserved.
